I fixed my problem by consulting a SanDisk Technical Support agent on their website. This is what he sent me.

"This issue may be due to some sort of corruption on the player itself. We should try formatting the player as a possible solution.

First, please press the ?Power/Menu? button for about 20 seconds to soft reset your player.

Caution: Formatting will erase all information on the Sansa mp3 player. Please be sure to have a back up of all the information before proceeding.

Please note: The Sansa e200 mp3 series is supported ONLY on Windows XP as the MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode will function, only on Windows XP and it requires Windows Media Player version 10 in order to function properly.

Also, MTP mode will not give you the FAT or FAT32 option. As soon as you select format, it will begin the operation, and format it accurately.

Before formatting, please set your player to MSC (Mass Storage Class) mode.

    Setup Mode to MSC

    1) Tap your menu button and select "Settings" > "USB".
    2) On this screen, make sure that there is a check next to "MSC" and NOT "Auto Detect" or ?MTP?.

To format the player on your PC, let us connect the e200 to your computer on an USB port preferably located near the power hub or to an external self powered USB hub, go to ?My Computer?, single right click on the ?Removable Disk? associated with your player, and select ?Format?. Let us please make sure that, under FILE SYSTEM, we change FAT to FAT32, and then single left click ?Start?. This will erase all data off the e200 and correct errors on it, which should make the e200 usable again.

We also recommend formatting the player another way. Please be advised that formatting will erase all data.

Please right click on my computer and select ?Manage?. When ?Computer Management? comes up, please click on ?Disk Management? on the left hand side. After clicking on ?Disk Management? you should now have a list of drives in the right side panel. On the right, look for the e200, it may show up as Disk 1, 2, 3? Removable Disk. Right click on the larger "Volume" rectangular icon to the right of the Removable disk and select ?Format? choosing FAT32. If you do not have the format option, please select "New Partition" and just keep clicking next through the Wizard that appears.

After formatting the e200, please do try your player.

If you have the standard e200, if applicable, please download the firmware update for your e200 from our website. The link is:
    http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.as...

If formatting and firmware update in your computer is not possible, please do try the process again on another Windows XP computer.

NOTE: Please be aware that formatting is a normal and necessary method of drive maintenance and repair, and simply NOT formatting periodically can cause a drive to slip into failure due to the backup, and clutter of residual data.

    Please reply with the results.

In order for us to complete your registration information please email back to us the "Date" and "Place of Purchase" of the device.

Should you have any further inquiries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via Email.

Now if this doesn't work try this

"This issue could have been caused by file corruption or system errors on the device.

We should be able to fix your player. Disconnect the player from the computer if it is connected.

Please copy and paste the following link into your web browser address bar, and then click Go or hit your Enter key. When prompted, choose the option to Save the file to your Desktop.
    http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/Downl...

Once you have downloaded the file, please follow these instructions.

    1) Double click on My Computer so that you can see it on your screen.

    2) Turn the player off.

    3) On the top of the player is a Hold switch, move it to the right (toward the headphone jack) so you see Orange.

    4) On the left hand side of the player is a Record button, press and hold it while connecting the player to the computer. Continue holding the Record button until you see a new icon under "My Computer" called 16MB FORMAT. Once you see that icon you may release the Record button.

    5) Double click the file you downloaded earlier and run it. Follow all of the on-screen instructions, and when you get to the prompt where it asks you whether you would like to Format it, choose Yes. Once it is done, click Finish.

    6) Disconnect the player and look at the screen. Several things will be displayed, and when you see Key Lock, System Shutdown, move the Hold switch on the top back to the left.

    7) Turn the player on and watch the screen. If you see a Refresh Database Fail error, you will need to follow steps 1-7 again until you do not get the error. If it does not work the first time, it could take up to 3 times for it to work.

    Please advise.

If it fails, kindly return the player from place of purchase, it is still under the 30 day return policy.

Should you have any other concerns and queries please let us know, it is indeed our pleasure to assist you.

    Best regards,

"Refresh Database" never ends!

If you try to load too many songs onto the player initially, it may take up to an hour to get past Refresh database. Unfortunately, if you shut the player off while it is refreshing, it will more than likely ruin your player. Run the Sansa Recovery Tool or Update the Firmware on your Player as a workaround. Make sure the hold/lock switch isn't activated, just as a safeguard.
