The magnetron may not be cooling properly and the overheat is what is causing the shut down. The internal cooling fan will need to be checked for proper operation.

JTP85 microwave shuts completely off with a blank readout.

Your magnetron is overheating, and its attached thermostat is doing its job to protect the magnetron by shutting off the power to the oven until it cools back down to a safe temperature.

An overheating magnetron can be due to:

  • operating oven without cover(s) in place
  • wrong magnetron installed in oven
  • an old or otherwise failing magnetron
  • cracked magnetron magnet
  • improper power line voltage (should be 110-125VAC)
  • foods low in moisture (popcorn & bacon, e.g. - add 1/2 cup of water in rear oven when cooking such foods)
  • failed or inoperable cooling fan or hood vent exhaust fan
  • deteriorating foam weatherstripping seals in air ducts or on outside cover
  • blocked air vents (dust, animal nest debris, insufficient free air space behind & around oven, etc.)
  • clogged or greasy charcoal filter or grease filter
  • blocked duct in hood vent exhaust

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, and it is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

dee77f7.jpgAt our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Accessing some parts may require you to pull the oven from the wall and remove the cover.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

Oster OM1201E0VG countertop microwave

It sounds like the thermal fuse may be defective, or the fan is not running, or the magnetron is getting to hot. If there are any heat issues the thermal fuse will cut power and reset in 5 minutes.

Microwave runs about 3 to 4 minutes and shuts off like no power to unit but the breaker is not tripped and not hot, then the unit comes back on after about 15 minutes. ???

It sounds like the magnetron is not working properly and the temperature sensor is expecting temperature rise, it is not getting any and shuts down.
Hope that expalins it for you.

New maytag power shuts off and comes back in half hour

Depending on the model you may need a 15 or even up to a 20 amp circuit to operate the microwave. Check the installation instructions to be sure. What is most likely happening is the circuit in your home is not powerful enough to run the load of the microwave oven. If this is the case it could be dangerous. I would strongly recommend you have an expert examine the house wiring prior to starting the unit again.

My microwave shuts down after 3 - 4 minutes of running-completely, no electricity at all. it's like a fuse blows but there isn't anything to replace. Within 10 minutes, electricity is back and it will run...

Sounds like a thermal fuse on the main transformer.

Check that the airflow through the airvents on the underneath and rear of the oven are not blocked or fluffed up and that the microwave oven is not operated in a confined space.

Try operating it on a table with a good 6 inches of space on all 4 sides and see if that helps.

Over the range MV Oven shuts down from heat

it is triggering the overtemp switch. try to check the vent outlet, it could be clogged with dirt. or the cooling fan of the magnetron is no longer running. could be stuck up because of not being used for a long time.
