Vertical Black line on display

My Sony PFM-50C1 plasma display has a 1-inch wide vertical black line that runs from the top of the screen to the middle, about 8-inches from the right edge of the display. The authorized Sony technician who came to look at it referred me to the manufacturer's repair facility in San Diego. Since the warranty has expired, it will cost me $1100 for round trip shipping to the Sony facility plus whatever the repair costs might be. Do I have any good options besides junking the unit?

Sony has resolved the problem by replacing the unit. This is world class service at its best. I am delighted.

Rakesh, You have a "dual scan" panel, this is why the line only decends down the screen half-way. This could be a connection problem on the buffer board which causes loss of the drive signal only to that part of the display which it is connected to. The vertical address buffer will be located on the top rear of the display, use great caution in inspecting these cables and connectors. If the integrity of the cable and connector is good the panel itself may be bad due to the drive IC being located on the ribbon cable attached to the panel body. this is better known as COF or, chip-on-film technology. I hope this helps you. Good luck. Joe Weibel CustomElectronics.Org

Rakesh, How did you get Sony to replace the TV? How old was the TV and how far out of warranty was it? Thanks!
