SG 14's are notorious for soot in the heat tubes. Propane models are even more problematic. You need to have the unit cleaned and cleaned on a regular basis. If the unit doesn't roar when you light it then it's dirty. By cleaned I mean removal of burners and vac out heat tubes. There is a mesh in the front of the burners that becomes clogged up. that also must be washed. You'll need to have this done by a pro. you have to remove the gas valve and control plate to get the burners on the right. use a brush to clean out the the tubes. Then you will get that classic SG14 roar when she fires.

Black soot

Soot is caused by a few things in gas appliances. Propane even more so. Lack of combustion air is usually the culprit. In propane fired equipment orifice alignment, high pressure or the wrong burner orifice can cause yellow flames the result in soot build up. You need to find the culprit. Best to have a service tech check it out and clean it. when you know what to look for it can be easily fixed.

Soot coming out of flu

Hi there.
Soot coming out of the flue indicates poor flame quality and probably carbon or soot build up on fire tubes.
Have a technician check the gas pressure and the fire tubes for verification and cleaning if needed.
Regards.

Should there be soot in the flue deflector? How often should this be cleaned out and what is the best way to clean this out?

Soot is formed when the fuel combustion is incomplete. Incomplete combustion may occur if the fuel is low, air and fuel mixture is not correct, wrong size of burner orifice with respect to the fuel used ( propane or natural gas).
Soot can be removed by wiping it off with a nylon scrubbing pad dipped in grease cutting solution. Check also the fire tubes for soot or carbon build up.

Black soot every were how do i clean it and what with

Well, Boat Bob, you can clean the soot off by using a Shop Vac with a brush attachment on the hose. That will take off the biggest portion of it. Then you can clean the remainder of the outside with a damp cloth, but be sure to dry the cabinet afterward. Remove the screws the are holding the face of the of the cabinet on and proceed to clean all of the interior of the heater cabinet fire, with the Shop Vac , being sure to vacuum the burner(s) thoroughly, as well as the pilot assembly and all the mechanical 's. What soot isn't removed with shop vac, should be removed with a DRY cloth. Then use a can of compressed air with a straw nozzle (like you clean your computer with) to blow out the pilot and all around the pilot assembly.

For the remaining soot on walls, ceilings, furniture, etc. Gently vacuuming is the best way to remove the lion' share of the soot. Then, if necessary, the walls and ceiling can be washed with a diluted solution of Simple Green and water. Clean small areas at a time.

After that, you need to turn your attention, as to why the heater sooted? Several things come to mind ... No annual professional cleaning and service; Incomplete combustion; Vent pipe partially obstructed; Low gas pressure; Clogged burner(s), Obstructed air intake.

If you'd like further information, here is a link to your Owners Manual, which will help you to Troubleshoot the heater. http://www.empirecomfort.com/EMPIRECOMFORT/pdf2009/manuals/12433-10-0109DV.pdf

Hope this helped you to answer your questions.

Is there an easy way to get access to the rear vent to clean away soot and buildup?

You have to dismantle the back panel to have access in cleaning the flue. Soot formation or carbon build up on fryers are due to low operating gas pressure. When the fryer receives lower than the nameplate rating gas pressure, the flame on burners will be of poor quality (yellow flame) which will in turn produce soot/ carbon.

Teledyne Laars EPC-400 lights about 2% of the time I turn it on.

You may want to pull your pilot assembly out and clean it. If you have one. Some of these had a problem with soot building up on the pilot and that would cause the ignition spark to flow threw the soot ball that would build and you would hear a buzz rather than a spark. So no spark no ignition. After it tries a number of times the soot will move enough to let it light, but will build more soot and make it worse for the next time. If this is the problem this will reoccur and you can just set yourself to clean it now and again or the replacement has been improved to allow mor air to keep it from sooting. I hope this helps, good luck.

I have a propane Majestic heating unit which when it lites -- it really thumps like a delayed ignition. Any suggestions?

Hi, that is exactly what is going on, delayed ignition, that is what we call it. Mainly caused by soot build up at orfice and in burners. Propane units are notorious for this. You will need to clean this unit up very good.Use a dust mask if it is bad. This will take care of the problem, I have cleaned many and know how nasty it can get. Once they get just a small amount of carbon/soot on a part, it builds up fast causing this and many other problems.Sometimes, if there is a leak, or if the unit is supplied by a larger tank, low propane pressures will cause soot to build up. I hope this will help you as I am sure this is the solution. Keep me posted if you can. Sincerely,

I think that over time the pipes with baffels will carbon/soot up and close off the holes in the baffels hence louder.
