have you tried Function F7/F8 ?
Make sure that your display driver is installed correctly.
I had the same Laptop as you did and was able to have dual monitor.
Also check your Display driver in your control panel and make sure it set to dual monitor.
SOURCE: DIM SCREEN
It can be the inverter, or the backlight, ar also the switch that de-activates backlight when you close the laptop.

I would back mothmans answer 100% but might suggest you re-assemble the display to the laptop if you continue to have problems getting an external display going.

I've had the same problem with a Dell Lattitude D531. I've been told that it's the screen itself (which may have led to the original inverter going bad) but that one should also check to make sure none of the screws are making contact with any wires back there.

reloaded windows, updated all drivers, set monitors to dual using both external and on board screen - checked shutdown button for lid closing - gonna order another screen ribbon and inverter - just to make sure
found out what the fault was - the lid switch which is built into the top palm-rest/top case was functioning okay when pressing would spring back up - but on close inspection of the motherboard I found that the lid catch on the motherboard was heat damaged from an overheating fan & heat-sink and sticking down - so a sharp craft knife and a jewelers eyeglass soon sorted it and " hey presto " the graphics was restored.
thanks for all the comments and solutions.
