Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC40E Mini DV Digital Camcorder

1 Answer

Draining battery Have Sony DCR-HC40E Digital camcorder for two yrs. All of a sudden last month, battery went dead. Plugged in charger and charge light on camcorder flashes. Have looked at troubleshooting in manual, have purchased new battery, and charged it on seperate charger. With the battery fully charged, plug onto camcorder and the battery drains within an hour. Both batteries have tried this with and when plug the charger into camcorder does not seem to do anything. any suggestions (would assume the camcorder rather than battery as brand new battery has same problem)

This camera has had problems with the primary switch block faulting. The camera will power up all by itself when unattended and drain the battery. Another symptom would be the battery refuses to charge fully because the camera must remain in the "OFF" mode for the charge process to begin. Sony in Laredo, TX is replacing these controls at little or no cost, I would call them to see if they will repair this for you. Hope this helps you. It means the camera has detected that the battery is not genuine or not compatible. sony batteries has the data chip that provides the 'info' in infolithium.

Sony Handycam DCR-HC30 2004 model

Your unit is a 2004 model. If it has never been used since then the battery is probably no good and will need replaced. Batteries discharge 20% on a monthly basis just sitting on the shelf so yours went dead a long time ago. Then if they are left in that state (dead) they sulfate which means that sulfur oxides transfer to the plates and form an insulating surface. At that point all the charging in the world is not going to bring it back. All you can do is get another one. They are available at most stores which sell electronics. Get a new battery and charge it per the instructions and try using it again. This should solve your problem. Good luck.

Sony DCR-HC40 Battery Charging Problem Hi Mates - I did purchase a Sony DCR-HC40 camcorder around an year back and it was working superb till few days back. As of date, i am facing a problem where...

Had the same thing happen to me. Went out and bought a new battery and it, too, does not charge. Apparently something messed up with the in-camera charging system. It will charge for several minutes (charge light illuminated) and then the charge light goes dark. Battery gage shows that there is virtually no time left on either battery (old or new). Anyone have any ideas other than a trip back to Sony?
