Edge, Voice issues could either be software, or the most popular cause is your volume knob is dirty.. atleast, cleaning it has fixed several units. First, access the secret menu (at user screen press "-" key and the repeat button (at top of unit). scroll down to reset user data. let it shut down.. see if that fixes it. IF not, do this: (seeing that your unit IS OUT OF WARRANTY) You say you have the Vr 5 upgrade.. is this 5.14 or 5.32? Contact cleaner, or some type of rubbing alcohol would be needed during this part. Open up the unit (4 screws).. careful of static electricity.. (better if your grounded of course). Once you get it taken apart, spray the volume knob.. CAREFUL not to get any on the Hard drive, .. as a matter of fact, just take the Hard Drive off before you start spraying/pouring. get a cloth and use it like floss between the knob and the plastic piece soldered to the board. dont' be shy with the contact cleaner/alcohol. If you have any questions .. please ask before you start this. Good luck -Daniel

All navigation units are GPS Receivers - that is - they receive satellite signals. So, no there is no difference.

The battery looks like a Lithium battery and it should be 3 volts or close.

I to loaded new maps and am not autherised to use them. What a joke! Looks like a case of to much security to protect Magellian's already to high of a profit!

Road mate 700

The flash card hole is supposed to be empty - all you need should be on the hard disk BUT the first Roadmate 700 I purchased was empty i.e. no software loaded. The second failed due to bad power connection, the third worked but was factory refurbished! what a crass organisation Magellan is!!!

Try fiddling with the power connection that goes into the cradle that the unit sits on. The power connection is ultra sensitive. BUT, if you've only just bought the unit then you are in luck - return it and get your money - back Magellan Support is extremely poor.

I am binning my Roadmate and getting a Tomtom720 Go series with maps and cameras preloaded - it auto updates when it is on its cradle attached to my PC/internet.

Bin the Magella - 4 years of problems!!!!

Small IC chip on the back of your I/O board is losing connection. Look at my posts to other users with the same type problem. -Daniel

If everything else is working fine, specifically the touch screen, then it's probably your speaker. open unit and check your speaker for anything stuck to the back of the magnet (on the speaker). make sure the cable going from your speaker to the keypad PCB (board) is pushed in all the way. you may want to even pull it out and re-connect it. make sure the unit is off while you do this and try to ground yourself with something. good luck and let me know how it turns out.
