Pictures too dark. Shutter operating too slowly.

Are you in auto mode? If it is manual then it is possible that the settings are not correct for the light. You can look at the meter to see what the camera thinks about the exposure.

It sounds as if your subject is too dark. Does this happen when the area is brightly lit? Does the flash fire?

My d40 has a image in viewfinder, will not take picture

It sounds to me that you are using an incompatible lens or a broken one. Does this happen with the lens that came with the camera?

My Nikon d40 is all of a sudden taking dark pictures

Silvanus is correct - I have a D200 and often by accident adjust the exposure bias dial when taking the camera out of my backpack resulting in dark shots. I bet this is your problem.

Nikon D40 dark pictures all of a sudden

Are you using the automatic mode or manual mode? Try checking the dial and see which mode you are using.
If you are shooting on the mode with the crossed-out flash symbol, flash will not be fired, and if there is not enough light, the outcome will be very dark

Intermittent viewing screen failure

My most-usual answer: Contact Nikon USA (if you're in the US) and ship them the camera. This will cost if not under warranty, which they will estimate up-front, but it is the absolutely best solution to the problem!

Nikon D40 (very dark photographs)

If lens has aperture ring make sure its set to highest aperture (f22 etc). With nikon CPU lenses, all exposure metering is done inside lens, sounds like lens still has problems. Try another lens to test camera body, camera shop should be willing to help with this.
