I suspect the thrust bearing kit is bad. This comes with great instructions and is easily replaced. I would recommend changing this before replacing the machine. You are not out much if it does not work, but I am confident you will get it going by replacing this! This is a VERY common problem with these washers and the new kit has been redesigned.
its the brake, just as long as it stops, dont worry about it, made a web page that has pics on how to replace the spin bearing on the maytag atlantis washer, after searching the net on how to, finding the manual, not explanatory, i decided to make this a simple 1 page web site, with lots of pictures, i hope this can help someone else in doing this job. since it would cost too much money for a repairman to do the job, better to buy a new one instead, i tackled the job. since it basically takes apart the whole machine, it might help others even if they dont have the spin bearing problem but other parts to replace, http://www.geocities.com/maytagrepairwasher/
this is my experience repairing the maytag washer Atlantis mav series 9750 aww, I had to replace the spin bearing since it was making a jet engine noise when it was spinning out the water. its not an easy job for my 1st time taking this machine apart, you literally take it all apart to get to this bearing, but now I can show how to do it with pictures making it easier for you to do it. even if you have to replace something other than the spin bearing, this how to tutorial will show you how to get to most of the parts in this machine tutorial located here tutorial located here https://sites.google.com/site/maytagwasherrepair/maytag-washer-repair
