None of the files are messed up and the programs work fine, but you can only see the top left corner of the screen. The rest of it is either white, black or has lines all over it.
Everything on my laptop works fine. All the colors look correct behind the damage and all the programs run without a problem. All my files are still completely in tact and everything looks perfect except that the right side of the laptop is covered in little lines that fade into white toward the center. When I open Internet Explorer, for example, that white part still has my destktop wallpaper faded all messed up into it. There are also faint white lines going horizontally down the center of the laptop.
I have dropped it before and sent it in for repair and all it was initially was a few red lines coming out the right side, but it has escaladed to this and used to only happen when I turned the laptop on for the first time of the day, then turned it off upon seeing the lines, removed the battery for a minute or two with my laptop closed and upside down, and then turned in back on. Sometimes I had to do this more than once, but it would go away and revert back to the red lines that really didn't bother me so much.
Does anyone know the problem or how I can fix this?
Ack. Sounds like you might need to replace your screen (sounds pricey but is cheaper than a new laptop). You can find second hand/refurbished screens or another Aspire with a working screen being sold for parts on Ebay or here
On a side note, if you a have a PC monitor lying around, you can access your files by hooking it up to your laptop via the dvi slot. Granted, it seems a bit ghetto but its a quick fix until you get something more permanent.
I recently broke my iPhone screen and completely shattered a dell laptop a few years ago. You know all those people who are adamant about you buying proper carrying/protective cases? Screw 'em.
Noticed that a lot of people give advice without really reading the problem (especially on premium questions) and it really bothers me. Seems like they do it more for the "first post" award than to actually contribute any help.
On a side note, if you want to do this endeavour on your own, I am more than willing to answer basic questions. I had issues finding a walkthrough on your model but I have replaced the screen on my macbook pro (from matte to glossy) and a friends HP when he broke his. They all seem pretty similar.
Good luck!!!

Thanks so much. I saw a few accounts with a similar problem who said I should replace the screen, too, but I just wasn't all that sure.
Hearing it from someone who's read my problem in specific, though, really makes a difference.
Thank you. I'm definitely gonna get on buying a new screen asap. (:
