Kenmore refrigerator ice/water in door not working

My ice maker works fine, but the water and ice dispensers in the freezer door stop working from time to time. May stop working for 10 minutes, or 10 days.

  • jmmr108 Dec 19, 2008

Water is getting to the door. Nothing on the door works. Auger, water, light, nothing. Checked for loose connections between the door hinge and the icemaker board, found none.

    Model number is 253.44513600

  • jmmr108 Dec 19, 2008

The refrigerator is a Kenmore Elite

here is a way for you to fix your fridge:

Take the bottom kick plate off the refrigerator. The water line comes from the back, and goes up into the freezer door, under the freezer door, or a little under the refrigerator front, should be a quick connect. Pop it off, and then ask for water, and see if it comes out over there. If not, and you hear the valve kick in, in the back, the water tank inside the refrigerator, behind the bottom crisper draws could be frozen. Get a blow dryer, and heat it up, and then see if the water comes out of the tube, that you took off. If so hook it back up, and see if it comes out. When you do take the line off, and the water does come out, the water is frozen in the freezer door. Take the food off of the door, and get a blow dryer, and heat up the inner door liner, and then check it from time to time and see if the water comes out. If either of these work, turn the temp down a little. If this does not work. It will either be the dispenser switch, or the water valve.

    thanks Tom

Or, if your ice maker AND water aren't working, make sure one of your kids didn't hit the lock button before you try ALL OF THESE solutions.....like I did! Doh!

Check under your freezer door hinge or kickplate grill in the front, there should be a quick disconnect to take off and see if your getting water at least to your door.

There is a sensor that detects if there is ice in the dispensor and also one that senses if there is water pressure, on models about 2 years ago they had a problem with them freezing up, contact kenmore and get the updated parts to fix that problem.

From what I can gather your lever to operate the solenoid switch is likely broken or cracked. This happens quite often. Take the front cover off and take a close look. If you can get water to come out by depressing the micro switch the lever should press, you will just need a new lever. If not it will be the switch. Phone the nearest GE parts depot with your model number and they should be able to get it for you. Hope this help good luck

the micro switch below the fill spout is worn or the lever that actuates it is cracked.

Internal water dispenser stopped working

I lowered the temp on the freezer to 4 overnight, by morning water dispenser is working fine. I think that when we changed the temp to 7 (in order to make more ice ) it froze the water pipe going to the dispenser. I am going to keep both fridge and freezer at 5 ,and hope this will not happen again.

Kenmore Refrigerator stopped dispensing water

Look up through the ice despencer on the front door of the freezer. Is the flapper door open? If so it needs to be fixed. If its not then try leaving the freezer door open for 3+ hours to defrost the frozen line in the door. If that doesnt work, the water valve must be changed.(located behind fridge, take off back cord board panel at bottom, the valve is blue)... GOODLUCK!

Kenmore Refrigerator stopped dispensing water

Either your water tank in the fridge froze up, the waterline that goes up the freezer door from the bottom hinge froze, or the switch that your glass hits is damaged. Do you hear any humming or noises when you put your glass up to get water?
