My washer fills properly, but won't agitate or spin. I tried to turn the agitator by hand, and it will only turn approx 1 inch either direction, like a locked steering wheel does. Water drains at right time, rinse cycle runs at right time, just no agitation or spin cycle. I purchased it in 1998, but it could have been 1997...it came new in a home that I purchased in 1998.
What you need is a motor coupling. it connects to the motor and the other end of connects to the transmission. the part about 10.00 but i recomend having a professional install it because it can be tricky. i suggest you buy the part at a parts store or even online to get it even cheaper and then have someone install.

I'm having this same problem, on my whirlpool ultimate care II machine. my question is what causes this. I did something different...I allowed my teenagers to wash clothes. I am wondering if they overloaded the machine or did something to it.
My washer will wash, then instead of switching cycles on it's own we have to turn it to rinse then it will rinse, but when we try to turn it to spin cycle it won't do anything.Just wondering could it be the gears or something?
My McClary washer misses a couple cycles. It goes from filling with water right to spinning. It misses the agitation and drain cycles. I tried a different (used) timer with no luck.
