I went to use the grill this morning and plugged it in, not noticing that the plates were not in. Once I realized that the plates were not in I unplugged the unit and put the plates in. Now the grill does not work. I have been looking to see if there is a fix for this. According to the instruction manual, there is no place, that I had found, about turning it on without the plates in. The only thing, however, is on the grill itself -Do Not cook with plates properly in place-. Is there anyone out there that can provide some insight to this problem?
I had the same problem, unplug the grill, remove the screws on bottom hot plate. The brown wire which goes to the heating element is held by a small bracket to the body of the grill, it is protected by a white heat resistant wire cover, inside that wire cover is the thermal cut out which has melted and switched the machine off because without the cooking plates everything got too hot.
Best fix-order a new thermal cut out and replace.
Emergency fix- Only to be used in the event of a grilling emergency. Wrap the thermal cut out in aluminum cooking foil and carefully slide it back into the protective sleeve. CAUTION you now have no protection against the machine overheating, Make sure the plates are fitted or you will burn your house down and kill everyone in it.

With the unit unplugged, check the elements to see if one has become unseated. A gentle push should seat them. Some elements are plug in & can come unseated.

Hi joea64,
I'd contact the manufacturer (Salton, Inc.) customer service
site for parts or manual. If they don't have them, they should know
where to send you (though if they don't, I'd seriously wonder about the
company).
