SOURCE: Canon Rebel focus

I would only suggest you might clean the metal contacts on the inside rim of the lens....just be very careful what you use....a pencil eraser is good but make sure you clean away any shavings that might get into the camera...

SOURCE: Auto Focus Not Working

I had a same problem, Auto Focus works in all the Basic modes but it did not work in Advanced and Manual modes.  After couple of hours of frustration I found the solution. It worked for me, I hope it will work for you too.
Follow step by step instructions. Start the Camera
Go to M (Manual Mode) Press Menu Button Go to 6-th Tab Custom Functions (C.Fn) Select Clear settings Select Clear all Custom Func. (C.Fn)
This should fix your problem
Go back to shooting more and try your Auto Focus

The picture is half black

Half black would suggest that our camera flash and speed are not sycronised.try a slower speed when taking flash/indoor shots when in the creative mode eg,P- TV- AV- etc

I have a cannon 300D, was ok, then i went t o take a photo, and could not see any thigngthrough the viewfinder, its completley black, i have checked all settings etc, but can see nothing.... help ???????

Check the following, nothing blocking the lens e.g. filter or cap; power is on; battery needs to be recharged. Also put camera on automatic mode, turn on and off and restart in automatic mode. Also the viewfinder may have an on and off mode these cameras can so its best to start with simple and basic settings

My EOS 400D takes blue hued pics

You may have the white balance set incorrectly. If so, set it to "auto white balance".

My EOS 300d blank images

That problem is normally associated with having a too high shutter speed when using flash. If it happens in any mode, with or without flash you may have a shutter blind issue.

Test the camera at various shutter speeds and compare the results. If this black area is consistant across different shutter speeds, send it in for repair. It is most likely the shutter curtain not making a pass across the sensor fast enough, still obscuring the sensor when a photo was taken.

Camera auto focuses, shoots but the view screen is black

Check the playback menu that the review time has not been set to OFF. This will stop any pictures displaying on the back of the camera when taking them!

I leave mine at 2 secs which is long enough to quickly review and keeps the battery life up. If I need to review for longer, just use playback.

The flash won't come on if you have the camera in any of the creative modes (i.e. A-DEP, M, AV, TV or P). You can manually use it by pressing the flash button just above the lens release button on the front of the camera.

EOS-300D Flash

your flash is acting to 'fill' for you. fill lighting can be a benefit. if you don't want it, see settings menu to turn off flash until you need it. not difficult and worth knowing how to make simple routine setting adjustments.
good luck
