If you unplug for a minute and hit the power button it sound like it is coming on then it shuts off and the red power light flashes slowly. The TV is a Panisonic 1080i HDTV, about 6-7 years old. ... I have an old type sony tv with the big back and the red power light keeps flashing and ...
If the red light won't come on it is not getting power.First, try plugging it in to a different outlet,or unplug one of the gadgets you know is working and plug the tv in there. You are simply switching. If you know that there is power coming from the outlet and it still won't come on then you'll have to check the cord;don't go much farther than that without expert help.
That sounds exactly like a burnt bulb issue to me which is easily replaceable. But without the exact model of your TV I won't be able to know for sure. If you could comment with the model of your TV I can do some more research for you.

Try unplugging it for about 30-60 seconds, then plug it back in and before you turn it on, make sure there is a good video source going to the TV either from Satellite/Cable or a DVD player or something.
