I have an Inspiron 1000 laptop with windows XP. I have dial up internet and cannot connect to my service provider. I don't get a dial tone either. I believe the pins in the internet jack on the back of the laptop are broken. What can I do? Can I replace this part myself? If so, any advise on how to fix it and where I can purchase the part?

Please help so I don't have to buy a new one!

Some questions before we get started: -What operating system are you running? -Are you using DSL, cable or dial-up for Internet access? -If you?re using DSL or cable are you plugging your laptop directly into the Internet provider?s box? What is the manufacturer and model of it? -Have you tested your Internet connection to make sure its working? If it?s a phone line can you dial out, if its DSL or cable try connecting another computer to it. -When you plug your Internet cable into your PC does anything appear or change on your screen? Once you give us some more information to work with we can start figuring out what is going on.

What do u need to connect on the NetGear WPN824 RangeMax 108 Mbps Wireless G Router for it to be fully fuctinig

most wireless routers are the same. They have a WAN / Internet port that connects to your internet providers modem and four ports to connect your computers to, this is for wired configuration. For wireless you need to setup your security key, and network name(SSID) , see link below on how to connect to router, i wrote up yesterday . Once you have completed this step you can use your laptop to browse for wireless networks and press connect on your home network once the computer finds it. click here for some configuration help tips on how to connect to your router. Please note most routers will work simply connecting them, and trying to connect to "Default" or similar without any security. Some do not allow this and you need to create a security key and enable the wireless via the same console prior to use. Hope that helps you.

You don't connect to WAN port, you need to connect it to one of the switch ports. The wan is strictly for modem configuration

Dont have internet connection on my laptop

First change your LAN ip range on WRT54g, leave the wan interface as dynamic IP client. Connect your WAN port to the DSL router interface. ping your DSL router interface (most probably your DSL router will be having 192.168.1.1). Make sure that your laptop is not assigned with any static IP (Incase you use the laptop in home n work).

If you purchased a Linksys wireless roter then you shoul not need the switch anymore-
Try going directly from your time warner modem into the Interner/WAN port on the router and then plug your desktop computer and the vontage phone system into 2 of the ports on the router. After everything is hooked up you will probably need to power cycle for it all to work correctly.
Please power cycle in this order:

Reboot modem - then Router- then Vontage phone system.

Hope this helps

A router is basically a mini-computer that splits up one internet connections to 4 (or whatever # of ports you have).

Basic Connections to a router:
A Router requires a internet connections, so your broadband modem must connect to the WAN port (theres only one) of the router DIRECTLY. Then Ethernet cables go from the router to the computers on the LAN ports. Don't do something weird like connecting your internet to your computer then your computer to the routers WAN port, it'll most likely mess up.

Once you have connected your router like this, it should work.

If your modem only has a usb port, I have no idea how to make that work out. Sorry. Try getting a new modem from your ISP, or check if your modem does have a ethernet port, if it does just connnect that to the routers wan port.

Also computers should not interconnect with each other with use of a router. Thats what the router is for. Everything gets connected and split up at the router, nothing connects to anything else but the router, basically.

Using Wireless + PPPoE at the same time kills router. SMCWBR14-G2

Hi,
From your description, I am assuming you have a direct ethernet connection from an RJ45 connection in a jack in the wall. If this is the case, then you would just need to purchase a wireless router (linksys, D-link, netgear, etc). Connect the ethernet connection from the wall to the routers internet or WAN port. You will need to access the routers firmware configuration and set it to connect with PPPoE, so get your username and password from your ISP if you are not sure what it is.

You will be able to continue to have the PC plugged into the router with an ethernet cable, and then run the laptop with a wireless connection, just be sure to configure the laptop with the security key if applicable.

If you were using a software PPPoE connection on your PC, quit using it. Just set your network adapters on both computers to DHCP, and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps

Sounds defective. Disconnect it, flip it over and give it a smell. If you smell burnt wires or plastic (typically a faint smell, but a smell nonetheless) the router's toast.

No internet connection through router D-Link DI-524

-Connect your router to the wall and connect your laptop to the router using a cable.
-Use Internet Explorer and type the following line in the address bar: http://192.168.0.1
-You should see a Username and Password Screen...type admin for the username and leave the password blank, unless of course you did give it a password.
-Next you should see the D-Link setup page with tabs across the top that say Home - Advanced-Tools-Status-Help
-Click on the WAN button on the left side of the screen
-Now you should see the WAN Settings Screen
-Click on "Dynamic IP Address" (You should not use PPPoE)
-Click on the Apply button at the bottom of the screen.
-Now close your browswer and restart your computer.
-You should now be able to access the Internet...through the router cable and wireless
-Let me know if you need more help with any of these steps.
-Good luck...and I hope this helps!!

Generally for your wired machines assuming your internet connection starts at the

phone wire coming out of a jack or the
cable company's cable.

Either of those connect to a modem device

An ethernet cable from the modem device connects to either

a computer as you have not
or
the WAN port of the router (very seldon the LAN side)

additional computers can connect to the
LAN ports of the router (often a block of 4)
