Disconnect all your speaker wires from the back of the receiver and turn it back on. If it shuts off, you need to have it serviced. If not post a comment and I can walk you thru troubleshooting. Hope this helps

SOURCE: PIONEER AMP ERROR

Hello,
Most probably you have one of the power amplifier modules bad. They are the PAC010 and PAC011 type. You can remove one and power up the receiver. If it powers-up normaly it's that one.... (50% chance) Otherwise remove both and it should power up normally. Beware that these parts are expensive... Most times just with a new part the problem is solved. YMMV. Good luck

HDMI light is flashing

The unit is in protect mode. Try pressing and holding the 'advanced surround' and power buttons. It should power up. If it shuts down again right away, there is a problem with the amp that needs to be repaired.

Amp shutting down when volume gets too high

Easy! You either have a surround speaker wired backwards or there is a break in the wire leading to a surround speaker that is allowing the +&- to arc together. your amp shutsvoff as a protection to keep the arc from reaching the mother board. replace your wires man!!

I'd disconnect the surrounds and try to bring up the receiver again. If it works you may have only cooked the surrounds. If not, you've possibly cooked the receiver. Disconnect all speakers and try again. If it still won't work then you need a tech to look at it.

What make/model speakers were you trying to set up?

I believe that smell is the death of a semiconductor in the surround power amp. How loud did you have it? As for an inexpensive fix, there will be hours of diagnostic work, and the parts can be VERY hard to find and expensive.
There is also the issue of safety. You should likely take it in for repair. Receivers aren't as dangerous as televisions or microwaves but they often have the two live 110V wires exposed near the primary of their power transformer. If you don't know what that means I strongly recommend you don't fix it yourself. These can also be dangerous even when they're unplugged, due to high value, medium voltage capacitors

Blinking Standby

regarding the Pioneer VSX-912 blinking standby light. This is how you reset it; press the "advanced surround" and the " enter" at the same time for about 3 seconds. Make sure you press the ENTER on the reciever (its the one on top next to the small dial) If you press the "ON" instead of "ENTER" it will not work. If an error message comes on and shuts the unit down, just reset it again. This should save you some $$$$. To bad Pioneer did't put this info in the manual.
