My hitachi is only one year old and the picture has been getting darker and darker over the last month. i have the setting as bright as it will go, but it is getting almost to dark to watch. has anyone else had this problem and if so, what is the fix?
I was actually out looking for another set until I read this. I fixed just in time for the Superbowl!! Thanks!
One thing to note.......The first thing I did on the focus block was crank up the screen adjustment for the red lamp (upper left) to see if it made it better or worse. This must overdrive it or something because I heard a faint "pop", then the screen shut off. I unplugged it, turned that knob all the way down, waited 5 min., then turned the set back on. The screen came back on and I slowly returned that knob to it's original position. Everything was fine after that, but I'd avoid adjusting those top 3 knobs.
I have the same model with the same problem. i just paid a repair man to fix it. he adjusted the focus block. if you remove the lower front panel, then remove this other access panel under that there will be a block with 6 knobs on it to the upper left of the access port. 2 for each projector. play with the knobs till you can read the menu options again (mine was so dark i couldnt). then turn your color all the way down till its black and white. then adjust them until you get a nice perfect even gray. then turn your color up and adjust your settings. thats it in a nutshell. it took the pro about a half hour or so. if it takes you longer dont feel bad. i hope me paying for this service helps you guys out.

Re:
The screen/focus block assembly has caused problems with this model in the past. Sometimes it can be readjusted, other times replacement is called for.

I would try that if available but suspect a bad board somewhere in the set--average life on all Plasma sets is 3-5 years so maybe time to upgrade to a new set?
how much out of warranty is it? you should still get some support under the sale of goods act, in the UK, not quite sure anywhere else. Take a look at this site if you are in the UK - http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html If you are in America then you will have to dooyour own search i'm afraid. Hopefully this will help you.
When you spend this much on a tv it should last longer than 1 year, especially if someone is paying for it on installments.
Clean the lenes inside of the TV and the mirror and screen (a little dust build up on these three things adds up quick!) also if you smoke that can build up too! these tvs have too be cleaned inside
you need to replace the coolant in thr CRTs( picture tubes) Vert common problem in phillips. You can get the enitre repair kit at the following link which has the coolant and instruction CD for phillips coolanrt change. Heres the link its under the repair kit section. http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/
The tv has a room light sensor, shine a bright light at it , does picture get brighter? other wise when it is cool open the bulb door , is it coated or blackened, Don't touch bulb at all.
and a heavy covering of dust on internal mirrors will cause the same effect. you will need help to clean it.
Remove the Cap, clean the contacts with thin fine sand paper then blow out excess.
Reseal
