On a 97 Grand Cherokee 5.2l, intake manifold, passenger side, down low, under the throttle cable, is an elbow connecting to a vacuum line running cruise, heater controls & such. Connected almost immediately to that is a check valve about the size of nickel to a quarter. first make sure the elbow fits snug, THEN, check the check valve!
I have found it to be a LOT of running problems.
Driving along and with a slight push on the gas the engine would stutter or buck & try to die. Then I would push the gas to the floor & it would take off hitting on all 8! When I pulled mine it was blown, you could see daylight through it!
After replacing the check valve & elbow, it idles beautifully, has immediate pickup with a slight push on the gas.

You might check your fuel filter and hoses..could also might need carberator adjustment?

I could be the CKP (crank sensor), but it could also be several other factors including the TPS. The correct way to start a diagnosis would be to see if any trouble codes are stored in memory. I'm assuming all basic ignition components are ok ; spark plugs, etc.

I would suspect the iac stepper motor may be dirty or plugged off when coming back to idle. I would try cleaning it and the throttle body at the same time. Q- tips make it easier to clean and brake kleen makes It easier to remove the dirt. Were safety glasses and gloves with the aresol brake clean. After everything is clean you can reconnect battery and you will have to test drive for the iac to relearn it's steps. Hope this helps

This problem
is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and
throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use
carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC
chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is
running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the
speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and
blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the
negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control
.
