SOURCE: sony trinitron 32 in. pip no video, (raster, with audio)

What you have described there is a classic example of the jungle IC failure. Ic301 Sony p/n 8-752-101-04. A pic with no color, and lines or grainy texture in the picture. Not a project you want to tackle if you don't have the proper soldering equipment or skills. And not a costly one at a good repair shop.. Only real hurdle is getting that heavy monster into the shop. To answer your question, yes what you described there is raster. Even the salt & pepper looking screen with no real decernable image is described as raster. In fact any image generated on the CRT is raster. And yes, these sets are prone to solder joint problems, usually ring cracking in circuits that generate the most heat.

When tv is powered on tv only displaying channel number and sound -no raster. using video mode displays are ok. sound is also ok

Check and replace damaged component/s at its horizontal scan output section circuit. Check the LOT (Line Output Transformer) too for damage. Replace the horizontal scan output transistor. Check the input voltage to LOT. If the voltage is absent check the feeder resistor; if any. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. I have a sony trinitron wega - I know it is old but it is still great -- I need some advise on getting a pvr -- what should I look for

Actually, the TV is only a display device. It's just there to show you the picture from the PVR, and you're free to pick any model PVR with the features you want and a price you like. The only thing you need to be concerned about is connecting the PVR to the set.

Your Sony should have audio and video input jacks on the rear panel. (I'm assuming you have a Sony since your question is posted under that heading, but that's not always the case.) Almost every model has at least one set. These older models usually only offer composite video input with a single yellow RCA jack, and a pair of jacks (red and white) for stereo audio input. When you pick a PVR, just be sure it has a composite video output available. I haven't seen one yet that doesn't, but there a lot of models out there. If your model also happens to provide a component video input (with three RCA jacks, colored red, green and blue), that's even better. Component video gives better performance, and it's a standard output on PVRs and other video devices.

All you need to do is connect the PVR video output to the TV and select that input. You can connect the audio output to the TV, or use your home stereo receiver and speakers instead if you have a system. This might give you enhanced sound performance.

If your TV is a model not equipped with AV inputs (true for some very basic models, especially smaller screen sizes), you'll need an RF modulator. The TV can only pick up signals from its tuner, and that's where the modulator comes in. It takes the video and audio from the PVR and makes a channel 3 or 4 signal to the TV's antenna input. You might find a PVR with a modulator built in, but that's pretty rare now.

Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-36FS120 36" TV

Apparently, channels have to be autoprogrammed first before those buttons will work.

Our TV is 4 years old but we never used the channel buttons bc it was always hooked up to DirecTv thru video input. SO when we disconnected the TV to sell, we thought it was a problem.

My sony wega 36' circa 2001 will not receive cable signal.

If none of the r.f. inputs are working and you do not get local channels off of a pair of rabbit ears. You may have a bad tuner. Which you can get replaced for 125.00-150.00 or you could run the cable into a vcr input and use audio/video cables to connect to a video input on the tv and switch tv to that input and run the channels using your vcr. In other words, use your tv as a monitor and use the vcr tuner to pickup basic cable. Hope that takes care of it, Russmann.
