My dvd is very naughty it sometimes reads a dvd sometimes doesn't. I am feed of this. In windows 98 the writer works perfectly whereas in windows xp sp2 it doesn't. Though it can read data and audio cd's perfectly. what should i do ? and what is this firmware i have no idea about it?.My DVD RW if it tries to read my dvd it takes a lot of time to read what should I do.

So before I start my own tactics please help me? My DVD RW is just 6 months old.
1. go to device manager
/ right click on cd drive
/ uninstall driver
/ reboot and windows will reinstall driver
2. go to My computer
right click on cd drive
properties - check digital cd playback
recording - check enable cd recording on this drive
driver - update or uninstall
reboot your computer

Hardware fault.Try cleaning the lens using a can of compressed air and a q-tip. If this doesn't fix it then the dust has been baked on the lens and this is terminal. Junk this writer and buy a new one, it's cheap.
try downloading codex for your operating system, or use your hardware and software updates.if your using something like dvd clone try updating its firmwarei hope this helps and doesn,t confuse you if you need more help just repost i,ll post links , just include you type of operating system
if you have cd writer and dvd rom then change your cd drive with cd/dvd writer because in the case of cd writer and dvd rom it gives error but sometimes the dvd play also but computer freeze from sometime and when we copy data then give us error messages i give you suggest to buy new cd/dvd writer

can you tell me the manufacturer name
of your DVD writer or reader. some times this problem persists if the discs u ae installing are not of good quality or else the lens of your DVD writer or reader might be a bit older resulting in poor reading capability of your DVD writer or reader .
alwas avoid inserting scratched discs which results a longlasting duration for your DVD writer or reader. take care
