Dim screen... Purchased the TV in Fall of '05, in Fall of '06 the screen began to dim. It's still watchable most of the time, but picture is almost as if you turned down the brightness. There's no distortion. Any ideas?

It could be the ballast lamp, or it could be the optical engine, can you see in the rear of the TV if you can see if the ballast lamp is lit up. usually you need to unplug the ev and remove the rear cover or at least the vant over it to see if it is lit. If it is dead replacement is usually covered under warranty, within a year or so otherwise they cost around 200-300 dollars. If not, then the Optical engine is probably having problems and I would suggest replacing it if under warranty.

Hi ,
try swapping the screen with another one to just see if it is behaving the same, because some times the screen circuitry or the led screen could be damaged .

What did you do when you say you cleaned the screen? If you shine a flashlight on the screen can you see some very dim picture? If the back light is out. This will require replacing the power board.

The screen or picture is dim/gray. When you first turn it on the screen is black and slowly fades into a dim picture pixel by pixel.

It sounds like the lamp is on its way out. Depending on the size of the television, it may not be cost-effective to try to have it repaired. If it's under warranty, then contact either the manufacturer or the place where you purchased the TV, and find out what your recourse is. If it's out of warranty, however, there is a good chance that fixing it will cost 60% or what it would cost to purchase a new one. Sorry for the bad news.

How can I clean the mirrors on this tv?

to clean the mirrors you must remove the screen first there are several screws in the back to remove the screen. then there is a mirror shaped like a polligon clean this with a dry cloth do not use a paper towel. soft colth must be used on any optical surface. then clean the optical engine lens in the same manner. them the large mirror in the back. remeber if you leave a defect on any of these surfaces it will be amplified by the screen. this system relies on a lamp to provide bright picture so replace that as well. this should be a part of your anual cleaning agreement of the after market warranty you purchased assuming you bought one. dim picture = lamp, fuzzy, dim, dull picture = dust
