I have a 60" Hitachi Tv. It's 10 years old. I've been having problems for about 6 months. First it started that the picture & sound would come on for awhile & then shut off. Intermittantly, the picture & sound would come on & go off-at first it nly happened here & there. The power stays on all this time. Now, it has continuously gotten worse....sometimes the Tv won't come on for hours even tho' the power is on. It used to help by turning it on & off again & again, but that doesn't seem to make much difference now.I have comcast & go thru the VCR. I tried bypassing the VCR & also tried playing a tape thru the VCR during the blackouts. The VCR tape wouldn't show up(or the sound) on the screen either. The quality of the picture varies. Alot of times it has a bunch of horizontal lines especially right after it comes on...sometimes it is pretty good.
Should I try to get a repairman in or will it cost too much? Is it worth it or should I just buy a new one?
Re: Power but no sound or picture alot of the time
The fault you are describing sounds like what we in the trade call dry joints, basically where components are soldered into the circuit boards in manufacturing, the joints become brittle and crack thus forming a poor connection which can vary with heat. well worth repair may need a couple of electrolytics aswell but i could do the job myself safely for under £100.

Lamps have a limited life. They useually last 1000 hours or so. If the TV is on from 07:00 until say 23:00 every day, that equates to 60 days. There is no such lamp as a "One time replacement lamp" as they do not last for ever. The average life of a lamp is just about 6 months. If the picture is cloudy is probably needs the optice cleaning. It is very fiddly and damage can occur easily so get an authorised Hitachi repair service department to clean it for you. It should be carried out in your home and will take less than an hour. If anything gets broken, it is not your problem if they are heavy handed.
The TV is on protect mode.
This happens when an internal fault is detected.
Start leaving the TV unplugged overnight. This will drain power discharging capacitor and internal circuits, and sometimes can solve minor problems.
If the TV still does not start , it must be taken apart and tested.
Parts that commonly fail are the PSU, controller board, low buffer and sustain boards.
If the TV is only 13 months old, then it is worth calling Hitachi and asking for a warranty extension or a discounted repair.
This is a common problem with the older models. The opt chip fails. You can get a repair kit at www.magnavoxhelp.com. After a few months of getting smaller and smaller the audio and video will go out but the power light will remain lit.
Hi...I am sorry to say that I had this exact problem. It ended up being the upper and lower panel drives. I contacted Hitachi and even though my unit was out of warranty, they agree to pay for parts. I paid for labor myself, and it cost me $199.95.
Good luck with it...let me know how it turns out for you.
if you are hearing a click and electrical statics when you try to turn it ON, the flyback of the tv is busted there are alot of reasons for that problem lighting is one so dont leave the cable screwed in if ever youre going out for a long time. you can have it replaced by a technician ( flyback). but it would cost you. and im not sure if you can find an orginal flyback considering its 10years old. there are replacement flybacks but quality would not be as good as the original one.
I had the same exact problem.
I removed the bulb and cleaned it. There is a small screen at the top of the bulb and it was covered with dust. Once it was cleaned I replaced the bulb and it solved the problem.
