Hitachi skips over commercials & flickers

Hitachi 43fds01b has recently started turning off and flickering during commercials.. aspect ratio changes.. Have gone through manual and found a "commercial skip" button, but no way to reset it to zero. all the settings are from 30 to 180 for this feature. Any suggestions?

If by saying the "aspect ratio changes" you mean the picture shrinks from top and bottom, I would suspect an intermittent short inside one of your picture tubes. The commercial skip function is not causing a problem here. It is the rapid change from dark to light that I believe is putting an extra strain on a weak or defective picture tube.

How do you set cable to 16:9 output?

Different channels are broadcast in different aspect ratios, depending on the network and the show(s) being broadcast. Many older show are still broadcast in the 4:3 ratio to avoid distortion. Currently, there is nothing in the broadcast signal that tells the TV what aspect ratio to use. Therefore, TV remotes have a selection button (mine says "P.SIZE") that allows the user to change the aspect ratio to optimize the viewing experience.

Color on TV changes to black and white, then after awhile changes back

It is possible to be the box, and not your tv. A good way to test is to see if it does it when you are watching a dvd or another source. (game system, blue ray, ect) Hope this helps! Good luck!

Samsung HDTV model HLR5067W screen flickers when some commercials play other commercials are ok when viewing. Could this be my HD set top box or a cable?

If the TV works well with your dvd and regular programs there are no issues and the flickers due to commercials can be due to excess signal strength or even poor control from the set top box.
Try with another set top box to confirm as some of them can process noise which can cause this issue.

Their is a flickering line that go a cross my hole top screen how do I fix this or is it normal

Change your aspect ratio to full. You are on just scan. When on Just scan mode this is normal. They have to have that to be THX compliant. Just change your aspect to full or 16:9 and you will be fine.

Commercial skip/blackouts

Sounds like you're blessed to have a tv like that! Seriously: Some sets have settings that will cut down the sound during a commercial. Haveyou looked at your owner's manual? This tv may have setting to cut out the picture also when commercials come on. From a technical view point generally commercials have stronger signals than regular programming. This may be overloading your set. If this is the case, then you need to have it checked by good technician. A poorly operating power supply (not regulating properly) could possibly cause a problem like this. Also automatic gain control circuits could be not working properly. Stargazer
