I don't have heat in my house as far as central air goes and the side by side is in a part of the house that stays somewhat cold during the winter, I have found out recently as we hit a particularly cold spell that the ice cream in the freezer is getting soft, I turned the freezer now to it's coldest setting to see if that helps, if not can you tell me what the problem might be? The fridgerator isn't but about 5 months old. Sincerely Willy

Re: freezer not freezing

If you refrigerator is about 5 months old it is covered under full manufacrurer warranty. I beleive you do not want to void this warranty, so do not attempt to do any repairs and call the warranty service.

refrigerators only have one cooling system and that is for the freezer. The fridge part is cooled by sending a portion of the air from the freezer to the fridge. your fridge thermostat controls a fan that turns on and off as needed. first step is to make sure this is working, and not stuck on. turn your fridge to a somewhat warm no and open the door for a few minutes to allow the cold air out then check and see see if it gets very cold again within say an hour. if it does your fan is always on and you need to repair it. if that is working then you have to play with both freezer and fridge settings. best thing is to get a cheap thermometer and check your freezer temp. it should be around 0 to -5f if it is colder than that frigid air blowing into your fridge too cool the whole area will freeze anything close to the vent. once you have your freezer set then start adjusting your fridge. personally I have mine set at 34f knowing that some things on the top shelf will freeze. but I like my cola's COLD. so I put things like butter that are harder to freeze at that level. but if you don't want anything to freeze then a temp of 37 -39f is correct for your fridge. so it comes down to freezer temp, the amount of time the fan is on, and proximity to the vent. good luck
Temp is controlled by an electric motor(or could be vacuum hose) on the blender door of heater housing. If you find this is operating correctly, then the problem is a plugged heater core.Backflush it by removing both heater hoses and flushing from water pump side toward thermostat side.don-ohio
Yes, it must be vented to the outside, even if you're using central AC, too. The reason being is if you don't vent it to the outside, the hot air and humidity that normally goes thru the duct and out the window, will stay in the house and your Central AC will have to run longer and harder to overcome this rise in heat and humidity. In addition, the room that the portable AC is in, will get extremely hot & humid.
Is the fridge getting warmer at the same time? How cold/warm do you have the adjustment set? Have you removed the far rear panel of the freezer? Behind the far panel you will see the defroster unit. Make sure it is not frozen up or that could be the defrost heater or timer may be bad. There is also a vent that goes from freezer to fridge, ice can build up in there and cause the majority of the air to stay in the feezer, you should clean out the blockage. I use coat hangers and screwdrivers myself to break all the ice free.
Good day, Usually a cold weather issue. If the machine is getting light service, then that can add somewhat to the problem. The issue here is how much the machine runs per day,or more important, how much time it's off. When it runs less because of cool dry conditions, the freezer will run less.
As far a food freezing only on the bottom of the fresh food section, The longer off times contribute to that. Cold air, on the off cycle drift from the freezer compartment thru the returns into the bottom of the fridge section, which can cause that problem.
This is all based on the design of the machine, which has one compressor and one fan circulating motor.
Hate to sound corny, but, if you find a house with 7 kids and a stay at home Mom, who cooks all the meals, the door openings are high enough that this problem can't occur.

Ice cream needs colder temps than other items. One step that can help, is placing it on the lowest part of the freezer.

Many times a freezer and/or refrigeratordo not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many otherthings that can go wrong.
If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out thelast two tips.
If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...
Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to starttrouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then callinga repair person to do a simple thing for you...
It is not freezing because it's cold outside,It is freezing due to a problem.
It needs to thawed before it will work,
1st:Check or change the filter if need be.
2nd:Make sure none of the vents are blocked off(especially the return)
3rd:The only way to thaw it when temps are low outside, without being out in the weather is to turn on the air conditioner,You will need to use other means to heat your home until it thaws.
and Please if you use the stove for heating, don't fall asleep with it on.
Check and clean the condenser coils where heat is transfered to the room air. If they are plugged with dust it will cause your problem. Check the back wall of the freezer for snow. If snow is on the back wall you have a defrost system problem.
If you truely have a leak in the system that would need to be properly taken care of if you ever want to return to normal operation. If the defrost timer goes bad usually you will completely freeze up the coils which causes air circulation problems and only the very lowest part of the freezer (and sometimes fridge) sections will freeze. The upper top of the unit won't be very cold. Same thing happens if the evap. fan (above the coils) goes out (no air circ.).
