How do I get my Garmin GPSMap 60Csx to work with C-map software
I have a Garmin GPSmap 60Csx and an Inspiron 1300 laptop without a serial port. When I connect the gps, via USB, to the laptop and start the c-map navigation software, I get the message 'COM 3 not found'.
I have looked in devices and there are no ports configured. I go into the bios and cannot see how to turn on com 3 - if it is indeed there!
I have downloaded some trial virtual serial port software apps and (using the basic setup) have configured 2 virtual ports. I can then see com 1, 2 AND 3!
I then enter the configuration utility for c-map and no matter what com port I select, the software still does not recognise the gps. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to try and reconfigure the virtual ports, even if this would, indeed, work.
The garmin help for their unit is of no use whatsoever, I can't find any online help for c-map so any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Try posting the problem listing your virtual port software or the laptop itself as the product, you may get many more experts taking a look.
Other than that, one thing to try would be to set it up on a machine with a serial port, and if you can get it working see what all the settings are - it may give you some clues.
I used to use C-map years ago, so probably now much different, but we often had unrecognised port problems that usually meant two or three restarts before it would pick up the port (this was without changing any settings). Maybe they cured this in the last few years, but the best answer I got back then for why it happened was bad software code in c-map, never bothered to try the later versions.
Hope this helps a bit :)

GPS City will show you how to RESET your Garmin 62 series GPS back to factory default settings. Back up all ... -My GPSMap 62s will not track satellites! -Forgot what ... -My barometric altimeter will not work or calibrate.
I've just had to do this. Somewhat annoying and I'm sure there must be a quicker way. Let me know if you find one.

Firstly you need ArcGIS or something that can create .shp files. Load the Excel file into this. In Arc you need to right click the table and display the x y data (just to make sure it's all okay). Then save as a layer. Then export as an .shp file.

You can the open the.shp in DNRGarmin and upload to your GPS..,
You have use the unlock wizard to install the key that is provided with the software. When I bought my Mapsource CitySelect, it came with two keys. The way Garmin does it is, you can install the software as many times as you want on as many machines as you want, but can transfer the maps, data, etc ONLY to unlocked devices. Last I checked Garmin wanted $75 for additional unlocks. Some data is not locked, like Topo maps and some tide points since this data is obtained (by Garmin) from the gov't, which is free for us (wel, minus taxes we pay). Contact Garmin support, they are very attentive.
