Hi, I have a Garmin GPSmap 60Csx and an Inspiron 1300 laptop without a serial port. When I connect the gps, via USB, to the laptop and start the c-map navigation software, I get the message 'COM 3 not found'. I have looked in devices and there are no ports configured. I go into the bios and cannot see how to turn on com 3 - if it is indeed there! I have downloaded some trial virtual serial port software apps and (using the basic setup) have configured 2 virtual ports. I can then see com 1, 2 AND 3! I then enter the configuration utility for c-map and no matter what com port I select, the software still does not recognise the gps. Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to try and reconfigure the virtual ports, even if this would, indeed, work. The garmin help for their unit is of no use whatsoever, I can't find any online help for c-map so any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Russ
Make sure your usb ports are turned on in cmos and also make sure that you do not have them set to power saver mode
Try posting the problem listing your virtual port software or the laptop itself as the product, you may get many more experts taking a look. Other than that, one thing to try would be to set it up on a machine with a serial port, and if you can get it working see what all the settings are - it may give you some clues. I used to use C-map years ago, so probably now much different, but we often had unrecognised port problems that usually meant two or three restarts before it would pick up the port (this was without changing any settings). Maybe they cured this in the last few years, but the best answer I got back then for why it happened was bad software code in c-map, never bothered to try the later versions. Hope this helps a bit :)
