I often notice the same problem. and After reading through some of these Q & A's I have a theory. the Sony defaults to 2 channel in most cases i've read, and No Receiver can determine if a cable/sat signal is emitting Dolby Digital or not. so some of the ups and downs I feel come from the misinterpretation of the receiver of the source signal. Especially when you go from show to commercial to show, not to mention Premium channel to Local. I am still testing this theory, but fear I am on to something.

All speakers work on sound level test but i have no music coming from rear, center and sub when playing 5.1 dvd. also i am unable to use any of the surrond sound modes. richard

What cable did you hook up your dvd? The 5.1 sound works only with optical cable or HDMI. Check in the input settings wich one is selected. With the analog cable ( Stereo RCA) is not working. Good luck!

I need help with my surround sound!!

The calibration mic thing is to balance the sound evenly on surround sound systems, it replacles the older systems "TEST TONE" speaker setup, in other words it will balance each speaker say in a 5.1 setup to adjust the level output so the listening position is not overwhemled by say the rear surround speaker overriding the front left & right speaker or the most critical the center speaker. The calibration mic uses computer tech to make it easier for the user, no sound pressure calibration is needed as with the test tone setup mentioned earlier. The wireless speaker situation could be possibly waiting for the calibration confirmation, Read any user manual information if available.

Rear speakers no sound

you have to have it set to one of the sound settings to get surround sound , and if what you have hooked up does not have a digital connection ( optical or coax) you can not get dolby digital surround either
if it is the stereo your listening to then set a sound to get virtual surround sound ( unless you have a digital tuner that supports digital signal input

Kenwood KA-994 Amplifiler no sound from rear speakers.

SOUND FROM YOUR SURROUND SPEAKERS COMES BY BECAUSE OF PROCESSING THAT TAKES PLACE IN YOUR SURROUND CIRCUITS. IF THE SURROUND MODE IS ACTIVATED AND U GET NO EFFECT AND U SURE YOUR SURROND SPEAKERS ARE OPERATIONAL AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL. THEN THE PROBLEM LIES WITH YOUR SURROUND DECODING IN YOUR UNIT. REFER TO QUALIFIED SERVICING AGENTS.
