Keys O,S,D and X will not work when typing, but work in demo
The keyboard contact sheet is probably bad or at least needs a good cleaning.

The star wheel for carrier movement is broken. parts not available. smith corona is out of business 10-15 years now.

make sure corr. tape is installed properly and has tension on it, and the same with the ribbon so they don't interfere with the free rotation of the printwheel, make sure the petals on the printwheel arn't bent, otherwise will need a repair shop

Sometimes the metal shaft the carrier (print mechanism) rides on gets sticky. Put a little WD40 on a corner of a soft cloth and clean/lubricate that shaft.

Their is a mode or function key on the keyboard somewhere. Use it to activate or deactivate the keyboard features.
