Boot your system with external drive unconnected, then go to add new hardware. then plug in maxtor and follow guide, if this is not of any help then unplug and replug drive IE switch off replug and switch on your Maxtor. After a while when all the software gets together all will be harmonious and groovy.

I cant get gy lap top to recognise my maxtor3200 external hard drive any ideas would be appreciated

Make sure that connect the hard drive directly to a usb port on your laptop and not thru a usb hub, disconnect all other usb devices except the hard drive and try rebooting and see if it shows up.

Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, after years of use my Vista machine now tells me that the USB Device isnt recognised.

However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

hope this helps

No power to Maxtor personal storage 3200 when plugged in

Try to remove it from enclosure and connect directly to the computer. If still no go - here's some more information.

Maxtor and vista

Try some other USB device (memory-stick, printer, camera) in the USB slot in the Vista computer, just to "prove" that Vista will recognize _any_ USB device connected to that slot.

Maxtor 3200 /160gb

According to this, the device only supports Windows 2000, XP Pro and XP Home (and presumably, Vista as well).
