I have spoken to techs and people who do this kind of work and they ALWAYS suggest to let the pros do this kind of work on a laptop. On a desktop computer there is a lot of space to work. In a laptop, everything is so crammed in it is extremely difficult to do unless you really know your way around.

Hi Jallan, You didn?t specify but I assume you have the iBook G3 White. Be warned that Apple categorized this as not user replaceable and ALL of the sites I?ve been to state that this is a job left to those who have the experience. The reason is that you have to do pretty much a full field disassembly to replace the hard drive. If you have excellent attention to detail, patience, experience with the disassembly and handling of electronics then give it a try. If you don?t have these attributes but can afford to risk damaging your laptop beyond economic repair then give it a try. I would strongly suggest you take it to a local authorized repair shop, they won?t charge too much and their work is guaranteed. If you want to go ahead here are two links for disassembly instructions with pictures. Note that the first link instructions are probably the better of the two: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.12.0.html http://www.powerbooktech.com/knowledge,name-Hard-Drive,type-6.htm Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t for get to rate the posting!

SOURCE: fix my ibook g3, the screen only has a ?

This could potentially be a sign of a failing hard drive. Easiest way to find out would be to find your original installation disks, and inserting Disk 1 into the computer, and rebooting while holding down the C key on your keyboard to boot to the disk (If you have your Apple Hardware Test CD, use this instead, and rather than holding the C key, hold the option key when turning it on and tell the corresponding boot selection menu to boot to the hardware test). If you use the OS disks, look in your menus for a program called Disk Utility, and try to look up information on the hard drive to see if there's any obvious signs of it failing. If not, then I would recommend trying to do an archive and install of your operating system (this will keep your personal files and folders intact), to see if this alleviates the issue. If not, then chances are good that your hard drive will need to be replaced.

Can I upgrade the operating system on the g3?

OS X 10.3 supports your machine... you may have problems if your hard drive is too small.... It looks like this OS will work with your G3 IF you have ample hard drive and memory..

I was trying to install Mac OS X 10.3 on my G3 iBook, it did not work, and now neither does the iBook.

It sounds like you have a hardware issue of some sort - likely a bad hard drive, due to age. I would suggest taking the laptop to a repair shop (don't bother with the Apple Store, they'll tell you to buy a new laptop or just turn you away). Best of luck!

I am purchasing a gently used Apple/Mac-G3 **** Shell I-Book off E-Bay, but I want to up grade the hard drive as well as replace the battery, so it can be charged through the A/C adapter. Where are the...

on the clamshell iBook the battery is directly under the back edge of the computer. right in front of the hinges on the bottom side. The hard drive will be trickier to replace because you'll have to take the computer almost all the way apart. If the computer doesn't come with the disks, YES, you will need some. Those can also be found pretty cheaply on ebay.

Starting up

Has the hard drive been replaced yet? Computer hard drives have a 4 year average life. the last g3 shipped in 2002.................The G3 ibook was also infamous for bad logicboards or separated GPUs. Check

or
http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-notebooks/210232/diy-ibook-dual-usb-logic-board/

! for research only- I take no responsibilty if you turn your failing ibook into a brick or set your block on fire, but I know this technique very well!
