Camera will not come on when power is on in battery mode withe even new batteries /but will sometimes come on with usb power supply

SYMPTOM =
Camera suddenly powers down or stays off.

POSSIBLE CAUSES =
* The function of POWER OFF in (Setup) mode has been activated.
* The battery has run out.

SOLUTIONS / CORRECTIVE ACTIONS =
*Set the option of POWER OFF to OFF.
*Turn the power back on or charge the battery.

XTC-200 Midland camera not charging
Check the charger. And not every USB outlet can supply enough power to charge batteries. Then check the cable and the connectors, on both the charger and the camera. Something must stop the current to flow.

Camera does not respond
I see you can't even look on the screen, because you have to start the camera first, before you can switch between taking pictures and viewing. You you not even can see an error displayed on the screen.
Most obvious is the battery, or its connections. The manual says:
"The camera does not work even when batteries are installed."
Insert recharged batteries in the correct direction. "Inserting the battery and the SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card (sold separately)" (p. 13), "Charging the battery and setting up using the supplied CD" (p. 14), "Charging the battery with the supplied USB-AC adapter" (p. 17)
Battery performance may have been reduced temporarily due to low temperature. Take the batteries out of the camera, and warm them by putting them in your pocket for a while.
Then to make sure it is not the battery they advice to connect an external USB-AC adapter.:
An F-3AC USB-AC adapter (available separately) is recommended if the camera will be used for extended periods.
Note that the power cable supplied with the USB-AC adapter is for use exclusively with the USB-AC adapter. Do not use with other devices.
With the adapter, the voltage (and current it can deliver) could be enough to switch on the camera.
If it works, you should take aout the battery and check if the connection point of the battery and in the camera are clean and shiny. If not, please clean them with a dry cloth. Never use a sharp tool to clean electronic contacts. The manual says the battery will live up to 300 charge / discharge cycles. If the camera won't work with the battery and it works with the USB AC adapter, replace the battery.

Greetings - I suspect you purchased a third party battery (I've done the same to save some $$) sometimes with good results and sometimes not so good 8^(.

I suspect the camera message re: BATTERY TEMPERATURE HIGH is quite right as the battery spec for that camera is 3.7V. As you probably know from dealing with other cameras, a .1 or .2 V over or under is usually is not a problem., but 4.7V vs the required spec of 3.7V is not going to work out at all.

I suggest you contact the battery seller and let them know they sold you a defective part, assuming of course that it is a replacement part for the Nikon EN-EL10 that the camera calls for.

My new vivitar 5018 only stays on for about 5 mins before saying low power goodbye even with new batteries. Am I doing anything wrong?
Look through the setup menu for the time to go into shutdown/standby mode.  If this is why the camera shuts down (i.e. 5 mins set) then change it.
In standby mode almost all cameras come back to life with a press on the release button.
BUT - just make sure that you have the correct batteries installed - cheap AA cells often do not have the correct power characteristics to run modern systems. Sometimes you need LiON or a Super-AA to make them work.

I'm assuming you're talking about a point-and-shoot model, and not the 1000D as the category suggests. Camera mode has significantly higher power requirements than viewing mode. It is possible that your rechargeable battery has degraded to a point where it no longer can power camera mode, or it might just be discharged. Try with a freshly charged battery, or if you're lucky enough to run on AA batteries, get new ones. You might also try using the camera while plugged into the USB port of the PC, which might be able to supply power to the camera. I have noticed that when the batteries are near-empty, the camera "dies" rather abruptly.

Camera will power-up only when connected to DC
This from Sony website:

To ensure the proper operation of the battery, please do as follows after charging the battery.
(1) When charging by connecting the AC adaptor directly to the camera Pleasedisconnect DC IN from the camera after charging is completed. Also, itis recommended to remove the battery from the camera when charging iscompleted as the battery is discharged slightly even if the camera isturned off.
(2) When charging with the supplied USB cradle Ifthe camera is installed in the USB cradle, please leave the power cordconnected to the outlet (when using the power strip, please leave itsswitch to on).If you want to unplug the power cord (or switch off thepower strip) after the battery has been charged using the USB cradle,please remove the camera from the USB cradle. Also, it is recommendedto remove the battery from the camera when charging is completed as thebattery is discharged slightly even if the camera is turned off.
NOTE: When you charge the battery by connecting the AC adaptor directly tothe camera or using the USB cradle, do not leave it with the power corddisconnected from the outlet.

Should it not work, continue with the manual reset procedure below:
  1. Turn off the camera.
  2. Ensure the camera is not connected to an AC power adapter.
  3. Remove the battery from the camera for 15 seconds.
  4. Reinsert the battery.
  5. Turn on the camera.
NOTE: If the issue is not resolved by performing a reset procedure, service may be required .

I have a similar problem. The laptop switches into battery mode irregularry, even if no battery is inside. It runs stable with power cord connected for some minutes or hours, but sometimes switches off with no warning.
I have taken a new power cable, but still the same problem. The battery is broken, it only lasts some minutes.

In the menu"the middle right button" there is a auto power off mode that you may have activated just switch this to off.

Can a new battery destroy a camcorder?
It sure looks like it did some damage. At least you've got a work around. If the guy didn't say the battery would work in your camera, it's hard to see how he's at fault. It appears that he did live up to his end of the bargain. Perhaps you should have looked at the battery specs to see what it works with? Even if he's at fault, he probably would owe you only the current value of your camera rather than a new one.
