I have a problem with my DVD/RW drive on my Presario laptop. About a month ago, my computer stopped recognizing the drive. When the problem arose, l remove the drive and refix it back again and the drive started working again and all was fine. After two weeks later, l discover that the drive stopped working again, which indicate that l cannot use this driver all.Though, the disc drive is still getting power, and I can open and close the drive without problem, but it is not recognized. Any solutions?

reinstall your catalyst drivers from the ati website, there is also a M$ fixit for your CD/DVD drive located here http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems good luck!
Hi, First try to load the drivers for the system. Go to dell website provide the service tag and try to install the drivers. If this does not work then take the back up of data and do a simple factory restore.Check out my blog Click here

First, try a new USB cable. Two, try a different USB port (if using a hub, directly connect to the computer). Three, check if there are any updated drivers or firmware for the drive.
Cindy Wells (also make sure that the external drive is self-powered that the cord is undamaged and the power isn't surging or going into a brown-out. If it is one of the new bus-powered DVD drives, make sure that the computer has a good power source (not on battery for a laptop).)
Turn off your laptop, take the dvd-rw drive out of the laptop and then reseat it back into the slot so it snaps into place. Turn the laptop back on and make sure its recognized in My computer.
If it is reocognized then try to burn again and see what happens. If it still gives you the same message, see if your drive will read regular dvd movies. If it doesn't then that means the laser is going bad and the drive will need to be replaced.
I think buying a USB DVD drive is a very sensible idea as internal drives on laptops can be a pain to remove and fit and they are more prone to failure than their desktop brothers because of their flimsy construction.

Although it could be the hard drive, it could be any number of things as well. First, when the computer starts up, press the F8 key to bring up some options. Select disable automatic restart. This should allow the computer to stop at a blue screen so we can get some information from it. Do this and report back what that information says and we'll go from there. Thanks.
Hi takino,
Sounds like you have a faulty connection between your drive and the laptop or you drive has some serious problems.
The first thing to try is reseating your DVD drive as follows:
-Flip the laptop over with the front of the laptop facing you.
-The DVD drive should be on you right. Towards the right center there is a single screw that secures the DVD drive to the laptop, remove it.
-Insert a straightened paper clip into the release hole just underneath the DVD eject button on the DVD tray front. The DVD tray should eject.
- Use the DVD tray to pull the DVD drive out of the laptop. It shouldn?t take too much force, but it might be snug.
-Pull the drive out and look inside the bay. Clean any dust or foreign material in it or around the DVD connector in the bay or the drive itself.
-Reinsert the drive and replace the screw.
-Start the laptop and test.
If that doesn?t work I would suspect your drive is probably damaged. If you are lucky and know someone with an identical unit you can swap drives and see if the problem follows the drive or stays with the laptop. If the problem stays with the laptop you probably have a motherboard problem, if it goes with the drive then you have a bad drive. Replacement drives can usually be purchased relatively inexpensively on Ebay or other parts supply houses. Motherboards, however, tend to be more expensive and are far more complex to replace.
