Question about GE JVM1650 1000 Watts Microwave Oven

Surface Lights Don't Work

I have replaced both surface lights on my microwave, but they still do not light. I think the problem may be in the cicuit board because all other functions work properly. I noticed that he light sockets were loose when the unscrewed the old bulbs. In fact one bulb separated from the base and I had to force it out and I noticed the socket had melted a bit. I think the board arc'ed and shorted out the power to the suface lights. Is it possible to replace the board?

We regularly repair these control board assemblies for only $32.50 nationwide, and that's much cheaper than replacing the board. For safety, disassembly and other info see http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Product is GE Microwave (Spacesaver-type) JNM1731DM1BB. New surface light bulbs installed. Unable to turn them off or change from bright to dim

Bottom lights are controlled through relays on the main control board which is mounted on the back of the touch pads (control panel). You can check and see if wires are touching each other on the board but my guess is the board is defective and needs replaced.

This sounds like the control board also called a smart board in some models has to be replaced.

How do you repair the surface light on microwave

You know how when you turn on a regular light bulb and it burns out with a bright flash? What happens is that when the filament burns out, it breaks and bounces back and hits the other electrical post and basically shorts out causing that bright flash. Sometimes, when the light bulb in the microwave burned out, it shorted out, and caused the circuit-board trace to burn up. (This is not just conjecture; I've seen it.) If that's the case, then you would have to replace the main control circuit board. Unfortunately, a rather expensive repair for no lights. (Although the circuit board trace can usually be repaired by direct-soldering a wire to replace the burned trace. Sears repairmen won't do this, but an independent electronic technician could do it.

Microwave light stays on and unit won't heat/run

If it's not heating at all, the magnetron is to blame.

I have a GE Microwave oven model JVM1790SK01. The surface light switch doesn't work - the lamp stays on all the time; won't dim to night light and won't turn off

There are wires going from the main board to the surface lamp and turntable. They are thin orange, yellow and blue wires. I think the surface lamp is yellow and the turntable wires are orange. You should first try taking the bottom cover off. There are about 8 screws under neath and the bottom cover hinges on the back edge, just let it hang. You can now see the wires. Those wires short to the case where they go through from the main board to the lamps or turntable motor. You now have to move them away form the case. Sometimes they get pinched to the metal cabinet by the lamp socket area. Look for signs of pinched wiring there at the lamp socket or where they go through. Move them away, tape up the bad area.

GE microwave lights and fan do not work

If one of the surface light bulbs burnt out it may have shorted out the control board. Take the control board out and look for a burnt spot on the board. It may be able to be repaired with a drop of solder or solder in a jumper wire. Or you can purchase a new board, which may cost more than you want to put into the microwave.

Surface lights are not turning off and stay on Bright. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Unfortunately they are controlled by the circuit board and it is not repairable. The board will have to be replaced.Depending on age of unit you should call manufacturer and see what they say < might repair free>

GE Microwave Spacemaker oven, Model JVM240

That would almost certainly be a problem on the control circuit board. If the bulbs happen to short / blow out or if they are removed or installed while the microwave is still plugged in, there is often an arc which causes damage to the board. We repair regularly these boards for such problems for $32.50 nationwide.
