Air is not flowing in to the refrigerator from the freezer
When you open the freezer door do you hear the fan blowing?if not you have a bad evap fan motor,if the fan is blowing put your hand on the back inside wall of the freezer,if you feel like snow on the back inside wall you have a defrost problem and have to find what part is bad with a meter, bad defrost thermostat, heater or board or timer, send model number next time, ice builds up on the coil and air can't blow into fridge from freezer, could have a bad damper, also if the freezer is on top you could have a blocked drain in the freezer, the air vents freeze up and the fan can't blow air from freezer into fridge because the air ducts are frooze up,all it does is the freezer gets cold, the evaporator fan blows cold air from freezer into fridge section,so either the fan motor is bad,the fan blade is damaged or something is blocking the air like a bad damper or air ducts are frozen up,send the model number and let me know what you find,do you hear the fan,any ice on back freezer wall or anything else you see and i'll try to help you out.
in the fridge side there's an air baffle that allows the cold air to flow from the freezer to the fridge side as long as when you open the freezer door you hear the fan blowing, all that happens is the freezer gets cold, the evap fan blows cold air from the freezer to the fridge section, when it gets warm in the fridge section the thermostat calls for cold air,the air baffle opens until it's cold enough in the fridge section and then it closes, yours isn't opening to let the air come through,it's part number 2221296 and it's around 110.00 dollarshttp://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdir...
go here and you can see it.
also go here and you can look up your machinehttp://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdir...
if you open the fridge door, look up on the right side wall near the cieling you'll see a tag with the full model number.like i say if the fan is blowing and no air going to fridge side the baffle is stuck and needs to be replaced.hope this helps and good luck.
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdir...
to see the picture you have to copy that whole thing and paste it to see the picture,if you click on the searsparts direct look at part number 17,this is the part you need, also if you put in your model number and then on the right side click on type of search and then model you can look up all parts on your fridge.
glad to help,if you looked at the sears site you'll see that you don't have to copy and paste that whole email address to look at the part picture, when i copied it and pasted it it showed up so you all you have to do is click on the blue link, don't know why it didin't do that in the first place but hope the pictures help.
one more thing, did you move any of the shelves in the fridge section or is the fridge jammed with food?there are vents in the fridge section that if they're blocked the air can't get back into the freezer and stop air flow,i had a bag of fruit in my fridge and it blocked the air vent and my fridge was warm,i moved the bag and it was fine in a few hours,if this is fine the air baffle is the problem, just want you to check everything before you buy the part, also did you check the back inside wall of the freezer to make sure you don't have ice or like snow on it,from the bottom up in the freezer, remove the second bin or shelf and touch the back inside wall of the freezer with your hand and make sure no frost on it,if all checks good buy the part and install it,
that's great, this happened to me too, glad you checked everything again and found that all it was was a blocked air vent,if you need any help in the future let me know and will be happy to help you out.
when you open the freezer door do you hear the fan blowing?if so and there's ice buildup on the back inside wall of the freezer then you have a defrost problem, most likely a bad defrost thermostat part number 2321799 and it's around 25 dollars.also remove the bottom front kick panel and you should find a tech sheet down there, this will tell you how to put your machine into defrost or get a meter and read out the t-stat and the heater to see what part is bad but 9 out of 10 times it will be the t-stat,you can buy a new t-stat,then unplug the fridge, remove the back inside wall of the freezer, cut the two wires going to the t-stat and with a meter check the t-stat,you have to do this while it's cold, set you meter say on 20k,you'll see a 1 on the meter, touch the leads together and you should get a reading other than 1,then touch the leads to the t-stat wires and if it stays on the 1 it's bad,if you get a reading then it's good and then you'll have to check the heater,do it the same way, find out what wires go to the heater, unplug them and check the heater for continuity the same way you did the t-stat,if that's good then you have a bad board and then you have to melt out all the ice on the coil after you find out what part is bad,you can use a hair dryer to do this.the reason why i told you to cut the wires on the t-stat is when you have a defrost problem it's a good idea to change out the t-stat anyway, another thing you can do is if the tech sheet tells you how to put it into defrost you can cut the t-stat wires, put them together to bypass the t-stat,put it into defrost and if the heater comes on you know the t-stat is bad ir check it with a meter whatever way is easier for you.
that's great that you found the problem, when you go to get the new t-stat get the model number off of the fridge, look in the fridge section on the right side up near the cieling, give your parts store the full model number because the machines that showed up didn't have a timer they all had boards in them and this way you'll get the correct part.good job and glad i could help.if you need any help in the future let me know
also with a timer usually you need a straight blade screw driver to turn it,if it came out of defrost in like 20 minutes or so then the timer is ok but if you think it's bad change it out,if you melted all the ice you'll have like 7 to 10 days before it will ice up again so you want to change that out as soon as possible,if you see any ice on the coil melt it out with hair dryer, you don't want to leave the heater on for long periods of time or if you don't have a hair dryer you can unplug it and leave the doors open to melt it out but hair dryer is best
no problem,if you need anymore help let me know,i'm usually on around 6 o'clock pm to see if anybody emailed me for help.good luck

Check the damper in the top back of the fresh food section. make sure that it is open and air is coming through it.

I don't have a solution, but I have the same problem. Or rather I did until today when the freezer started defrosting itself too.
It sounds very similar to the RS21 problem that is on the watchdog website, but as my fridge/freezer is 8 years old I don't think they are going to give two hoots about repairing it foc.

had same exact problem - followed advice for fixing same problem in similar refrig. took of the back panel off the freezer section - 8 hex head screws - and found the cooling fins all frosted over.
SOURCE: Refrigerator not cold/Freezer cold.
The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent
between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through
it. There is a flap you adjust with the
fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the
fridge temp .
.
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer
are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of
cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

The model number is KSSO36QTX KitchenAid Side-by-Side Bulit-In.
Thanks for your help.
Thanks!
OK, thanks again.
Yes, I did move food away in case it was blocking the vent. The refrigerator seems to be cooling properly now. I will check again in a few days/weeks to see if ice builds up on the evaporator.
In the meantime, seems all systems are go. Thanks for your help.
I may have spoken too soon. The fridge has started getting warm again. Airflow to the fridge section at the top appears to have slowed. Checked for anything blocking it - all is clear. Also, removed the covering from the outlet to be sure the louver is open, and it is.
I also noticed ice build up on the evaporator(?) at the bottom of the freezer section. Not enough maybe to block airflow yet, but is this ice buildup normal?
Sal,
I'll give this a try, thanks.
Sorry, do you mean the thermostat in the freezer control panel at the top of the inside of the freezer section or the defrost timer above and outside of the freezer compartment and near the compressor?
OK, I found the defrost thermostat. It used to be a bi-metal type, but no longer. Joined the leads to the thermostat together and the heater started heating up. Defrosted the fridge this way and now am ordering a new thermostat and timer (the dial/switch on the timer was broken anyway). Thanks again!
Parts are on their way. Hopefully, we have isolated the problem and the fix will work. I really appreciate your help and the folks at FixYa for making this site and experts such as yourself available. All the best!
