Horizontal lines at top of screen.
Send your email address to me, and get a copy of it by return mail.
I've already send it to you as an email attachment.
The one you sent me was for AV-32D502, do you have the AV-36D500 ,its a Canadian model.

Wow I miss these days.. Replacing 100UF caps for Vert. circuits on old RCA's and similar.. Got into Laptops now but happened-stanced on this website and the Premtech knows what hes doing.. (Remember the GE/SYL chassies w/ Cold joints in the integrated tuners)?.(snowed out) Thousands). Have fun guys and I'm here to help as well. (Laptops High end stereos, and Hi-def TV's only please).. (Hate telling people their toaster ovens are replacable.. (Blue haird's) Good posts!

I have a similar problem on my CRT computer monitor (AcerView 76c). It is an old screen and I think it is just at the end of its life, much like your TV. Having some background in physics, I would be pretty sure that the problem is with the cathode ray tube's vertical deflection system. The horizontal deflection electrodes are working while the vertical one is not. This results in a display of a single horizontal line (or in my case, a few superimposed) in the centre of the screen. Where both X and Y (horizontal and vertical) deflectors fail then the electron gun firing would result in a single bright spot in the dead-centre of the screen.
So really, we have no choice but to move on and buy a new set as repair is probably just as, if not more, expensive than replacement with a new device. Seeing as your post was in 2007, I hope you managed to solve the problem.
Best wishes,
SZ (Sydney, AUS)

YES THERE ARE 3 CAPS. 2 ARE SMALL ONE LARGE IN THE VERTICAL CIRCUIT. 1 OR 2.2 uF AND A 1000uF. ALL ARE VERY CLOSE TO THE VERT. IC AND YOKE PLUG. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION SHOULD SHOW WHICH ONES DRIED OUT AS THE HEAT SHRINK WRAPPING AROUND THEM PEALS UP. ALSO WHEN YOU UNSOLDER IT YOU MIGHT SMELL "STINKY FISH" AS THE ORGANIC ACID INSIDE IS LEAKING OUT THE BOTTOM. LOOK FOR BROWN OOZE ON THE LEGS ALSO.

if you havent fixed your problem yet, i had the same problem twice. It turned out to be the vertical hold. i have had the tv for a long time and had three problems. like i said twice the vertical hold and now i have no picture with a blinking light. i may give up on it and get rid of it

Hello
You are seeing vertical retrace lines. This faut is due to the vertical output section inside your TV. To rectify this fault, you must open your Tv. Just open it after unpluging it from the wall power socket. Locate the vertical output section on the printed circuit board.
It is easy to locate. You can see four wires goes from the deflection yoke; the coil fitted around the neck of the picture tube. Out of which two of them will be thick, usually red and blue coloured, and the other two will be thin. These two thin wires are for vertcal scanning. Just follow these two thin wires, and you will reach a point where these four wires are pluged onto the main circuit board, very near to the LOT. Upside down the printed circuit board, and follow the print of that two thin wires, and you will reach to the vertical output section of your Tv.
Before doing anything, just look for any loose soldering or bad solderings there. It is very difficult to find out loose solderings, as thay will be microscopic, I advice you to resolder most of the soldering points there by applying a little more solder; without making any solder short. Resolder all the pins of the vertical output IC, and see the effect.
If this does not help, replace the two or three electrolytic capacitors, at about 1000MF to 2200MFD there, with same capacity and voltage ratings. Make sure about their polarity, as electrolytic capacitors have both positive and negative terminals like torch cells. Note the polarity when resoldering them out of the board. This must solve ypur problem.

Wish you sucess.
