My canon eos 88 model camera does not function at all. it was taken to a hill station and there it suddenly stopped working.even with new set of batteries only a sound of motor winding comes but the shutter did not function. someone told me that it may be a poblem with the gear functioning is it true if not what can be the problem and what should i do now please guide.
Junk it. If not working properly with new batteries, reset, etc. then something is definitely wrong with unit and it is simply not cost effective to repair.

The EOS 50 is the same as the EOS Elan II, and you can download the manual here.

Beleive the CCD has stopped responding. A cheap way to verify this is to point an infrared remote towards the lens and press a key. This will usually provoke a response from the camera even if all else fails, barring a bad pickup device...accordianman

Try doing a reset in the camera tools somewhere, this fixed a similar problem I had.

You have to set the camera to "Live View" mode. Check your manual for settings.
BTW, it's usually a bad idea to use Live View mode unless the camera is on a tripod. With Live View you have to hold the camera out in front of you and it's much less steady.
