Black square in the middle of my viewing screen.

I have a large black square in the middle of my viewing screen. The broadcast I can see going on behind this black square. It seems to go away during commercials. Sometimes it carries on all channels and both antennas. I have a tivo, Dvd player, Cable box, Hdtv cable box connected to the tv. I've had all this working for years now. I think I must had hit a button on the remote or something. Any ideas?

You have accendly turned on closed caption. the closed caption you have tured on is not the normal closed caption we are used to . it is called colsed caption text. either on your remote or in you manu, find the way to turn off cc & you should work ok. good luck.

A black square pops up in the middle of the screen after awhile, what could be the problem ?

How big is this black square? Is it like 1/4 to 1/2 the size of the screen? If so, you probably have Closed-Captioning turned on, and turned on to TEXT mode. Either change it to CC1, or else turn it off, and your black square will go away!

We have 2002 panasonic large screen tv. It has a large black square in the middle of the screen. Is is repairable

Yes and usually by the customer - turn off the closed captioning (CC). Look through the on screen menu (setup menu) to find closed caption and select it to off.

Large black square blocks screen

Most likely it's the closed captioning has been turned on. From your post I assume you have the remote control and able to access the menus so try to turn off the closed captioning. I'll be notified if you post something new.

Black square

Black square in the middle could be closed captioning. Light engine is approx. $700 to $1000 for the parts alone. Time consuming job to change - 2 hours - so expect a hefty labor charge as well.

Black screen

I have a Sharp Tv that had the same problem with a large brownish or black square right in the middle of the screen. It only left about an inch around the edges that you
could see the picture moving in behind the big black block or square.I have DISH sat-elite and the book recomending that I check and see if the "caption settings" were on
or off. They were on. I turned the caption settings off and the large square diappeared.
