The player asks me to pick language every time I turn it on...also no longer playing wma's
I have had this player for 2 weeks. Suddenly it is not playing any downloaded music from walmart. I have the most recent firmware installed and the player seems to be reseting every time I turn it on. Asks me to pick language at every startup. I have also formatted the player before I updated the firmware. Don't really know what to do.
I was considering returning and upgrading to a larger 4gig version, but this site seems to point out many problems with this brand. Any help is appreciated.

These are the most common methods for recovering Sandisk's Sansa Mp3 Players. I have been almost universally successful in recovering Sansa players using one or a combination of these methods. These methods do not work if you are having synchronization or music format issues - they are for recovering a player that will not power up, freezes, flashes, is not recognized by the computer, and a host of other issues.
Reset the Sansa Player first. On most models, restart is done by holding the power button in for 15 seconds or longer. Check your specific manual to be sure. The manuals are available from the Sansa website if they have been misplaced. Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website. Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything. Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/DriverDownload/driverList.asp If these fail, then: Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard. If you get the problem where MTP Device keeps popping up continuously, uninstall the “MTP Device” by going to Start à Control Panel àSystem à Hardware à Device Manager (you computer may vary slightly, depending on Windows Version). You may have to restart your computer after each of these methods to get them to work properly. Disconnect your Sansa player BEFORE shutting down your computer. -Tha Mp3 Doctor

The player does in fact play WMA files. However, if the audiobook is a protected audiobook that you purchased, the Coby device cannot play what is called DRM protected files. While Overdrive supports the playback of these files, the Coby player may not, or you no longer have authorization to play the file.
Here is the asterisk behind WMA compatibility - there are two types of WMA files - protected and unprotected. 90% of WMA files are DRM-protected, hence they are either not usable in mp3 players that say they can play WMA's, or the song has a DRM restriction on it that prevents it from being played on an mp3 player without purchasing additional rights.
To avoid the problem completely, only download songs that are in mp3 format. It may be more expensive initially, but they are better in the long-term - even if you found a WMA file that eventually works with your mp3 player, the protected WMA files have an expiration date, so they would stop working after 30 days, 90 days, 1 year, or 2 years depending on the specific license for each song. Mp3 files never expire, never give you error messages, and work with nearly (if not all) 100% of mp3 players.
There two types of WMA file - protected and unprotected (also called "DRM-free" and "DRM-encrypted"). Some protected or encrypted WMA's may allow you to play back on your computer, but will not allow you to play those same files on an mp3 player. There are only two ways around your problem - one is expesnive, and one is illegal:
1) You can purchase additional rights on Overdrive to transfer your audiobooks to a "portable device" (by which, they include mp3 players).
2) You can download a program such as Tunebite to strip the Overdrive of it's DRM license, rendering the file of its protection (I would NOT reccomend this route).
The WMA files that you had that worked before were either unprotected, or were protected but had transfer rights.
go to windows media played, pick songs that are compatable with your player which means mp3's and wma but not all wma will play either. You also have to watch for secure music. Next connect the mp3 and when it shows on the window media played you then go to sync and drag the music you have picked and allow it to download to your mp3 and you should be ready to go. If you have problems you may want to go to the main computer first and format your mp3 first.
This is the worst mp3 player ever invented - i have to tell you this up front. There is no driver, the company does not support the product anymore - I would return it now while you still can.
Either the device is bad, the pc port is bad, or the software is faulty. Try connecting to different usb port, then a usb port on a different pc with a compatible os. If still not recognized, then there is physical damage to player.
