Receiving Fax using a phone line with voicemail on a Lexmark 5470
I have a phone line with voicemail (not a separate answering machine). I have the fax set up on the same line.
I have set the number of rings for the fax to be at 3 and the voice mail at 5. However, if someone calls for voice, the fax machine picks up at three rings with a squelch. I have also tried it in reverse with no luck.
How can I receive calls and faxes without disconnecting one or the other?

If you're having problems sending faxes, make sure that the printer is connected to an active phone line. The best setup would be to connect the printer straight to a wall jack and the other end of the phone cable should be connected to the line port at the back of the printer.
If you're having receiving faxes, check the fax settings > Ringing and Answering. Check if the Auto Answer is enabled and check how many rings the fax will pick up any faxes sent to your number. If you have an answering machine connected to the same line, set the printer to pick up 3 rings higher than your fax machine. If you have a voicemail service, you'll need to get a distinctive ring feature from your phone provider.

Are you sharing your home phone line with your fax? If so, do you have a voicemail or an answering machine connected in the same line?
If you have an answering machine connected to the same
line as the fax, set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the
printer does. Increase the number of rings by a factor of 3 over the answering
machine. For example, if the answering machine is set to pick up on 4 rings,
set the printer to pick up on 7 rings.
If you have a voicemail feature in the same line as the
fax, you may subscribe from your phone service provider for a distinctive ring
pattern feature. You can program your printer to have a distinctive ring
pattern and phone number for incoming faxes.

Make sure to plug the telephone fax line from the phone jack in the wall to
the Line port on the back of your printer. For more info, please refer to the
Lexmark X4200 User's Guide.
Make sure the fax machine is connected to right phone jack in the wall and is assigned with the correct fax number.
If you have an answering machine connected to the same fax line, be sure to
configure it so that it answers first before the fax machine (e.g. if your
answering machine picks up on the 3rd ring, set your fax to pick up on the
6th ring or more)
If the line has a voicemail feature, disable it or request for a
distinctive ring from your phone company.
Ensure that the telephone/fax line is plugged into the Line port on the back of Lexmark printer and not in the Phone port.

Make sure the correct fax number is assigned on the printer. If you have a voicemail feature associated with the fax line, please disable the voicemail. Voicemail feature and the fax will not work together in the same line.
You don't need to have a computer plugged in to the Lexmark printer to receive faxes. Here's an article on How to Configure the Lexmark X7170 to Receive Faxes. Just click on this link: http://bit.ly/d643uT. If you are sharing your home phone line with the fax and you have an answering machine on the same line, make sure to configure the answering machine to pick up first then the fax machine. Voicemail feature can also block incoming faxes. Once voicemail picks up the fax, signal won't be passed on to the printer. But if you want, you can also contact Lexmark technical support to further investigate the problem.
