Question about IBM TravelStar 4GN 4.32 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

HDD keeps clicking

I tried to defrag the hdd. It got to 10% and gave up. All I get out of it is a clicking noise and the start up screen states that the hdd is missing. I have removed the hdd and connected it to an external usb caddy and then to my PC. The drive continues to click and isn't seen by by my PC. Is this this a mechanicle fault and not repairable?

The clicking noise is the sound of the read/write heads going to the home position. The arm or bracket the heads are mounted on make the noise when they hit up against the equivalent of a *door stop*. This is the drives attempt to reorient itself when it can read something where it expects to find it. As you have guessed its probably a mechanical fault and definitely not repairable.

Scandisk. Check HDD for SMART problems. chkdsk. Remove old unused programs. Check MSCONFIG for startup items. Use Ccleaner to clean up your computer. Use Malwarebytes Antimalware for malware removal. Defrag your HDD. You can use Auslogics Disk Defrag Screen Saver. Post results please

I turn on asus laptop and it seems to be can't complete "POST".

r u sure that your comp isnt completing POST coz from the issue stated i suspect that it could be a hdd issue. try doing an OSRI from a bootable disc and this should resolve the issue.., else try running DIAGS on the hdd to check if there is any issue with the HDD.

SYSTEM IS SLOW

Try running a disc cleanup and then defrag. They should be located in your control panel under the maintenance & performance tab. Doing this regularily will help keep your system running smooth. Hope this helps.

Hdd failure

It is not smart to switch a IDE with a SATA,
it should be IDE with IDE and SATA with SATA

Each transmit diffrent levels of instructions.

The clicking is definitely not a good thing. It means you nearly shorted something out to the point where its not sending the correct impulses in power. Most likely the hard drive might be able to work. but the clicking means its blocked or somethings preventing the head from moving or doing what its supposed to do. You will need a new Hard Drive.

My recommendation is to send your old HDD to have it recovered in a clean room if you want your data from it. or replace board with like board, being exact. other wise switch the board and have a high level format for the clicking. Its the only real way to fix a HDD, but its not worth it for the cost that you will be charged. Your better off buying a new HDD

My computer is extremely slow

1. Uninstall Unneeded Programs (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs) Keeps at least 10% of your HDD free, 20% is preferred. Windows uses this space for it's swapfile.
2. Scan Your Hard Disk for Errors. (Double-Click MY COMPUTER, Right Click C:, Properties, TOOLS TAB)
3. Scan for Viruses (If you don't have an updated and functional AV, http://free.grisoft.com)
4. Check for Spyware and Adware (http://www.download.com, Spybot search and destroy)
5. Defragment Your Hard Drive (Double-Click MY COMPUTER, Right Click C:, Properties, TOOLS TAB)
6. Adjust Visual Effects for Better Performance (Right-Click the MY Computer Icon, Properties, Advanced TAB)
7. Stop Programs from starting on Windows boot (Start, RUN, MSCONFIG)
