If Firefox and Google Chrome are not working after updating them or installing Windows update, then it's suggested that you restart the computer and then check if they work.
Even after restarting the computer, it does not work, then rollback the Windows update or browser update.
Furthermore, these kind of issues may occur if you've installed any antivirus program which offers virtual browsing feature. In this case, try disabling either the virtual browsing feature of the Antivirus program or the antivirus program altogether momentarily.
Finally, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the browsers.

There are a few possible problems. The most likely is that somehow your images/movies, etc got turned off. Go to Options>Under the Hood>Content Settings and make sure nothing's turned off. Also, check your plugins (should be in "Under the Hood") to make sure that everything's enabled.
If it's like this only for certain sites, there might be a compatibility issue with the site using google chrome, or one of its many updates. Try following the instructions on this site to downgrade the version of Chrome. Make sure to deny the auto updates though, or it will silently upgrade and undo your work.
If neither of those options work/sound appealing to you, just use firefox or some other web browser to navigate until google chrome updates again. If you're having this issue, I guarantee others are too, so they'll come out with an update soon to take care of the issue. Good luck!
