Shift key has to be pressed firmly to work.

It seems to be only my shift key on the right hand side of my keyboard isn't working. The rest of the keys work perfectly. Is it a hardware problem or is just a worn out key? Know how to fix it?

If there were more that one key that has failed it would indicate that you have a keyboard controller chip that has failed or that the connector from the keyboard to the motherboard is not making proper contact. You may get that key to work by pressing that key very firmly.

You may be able to fix the faulty key by removing that key and spraying the faulty key contact with electronic spray cleaner whilst pressing the key pad several times. It may not work because it may be sealed and the cleaning fluid may not be able to penetrate the key contacts.

Then the only thing to do is to buy and fit a new keyboard from the manufacrurer.,

The shift key on the keyboard worked half the time for a while and now it won't work at all

Try the following:

1. Press the shift key several times and check if it changes anything. This is to make sure the inner part of the key isn't sticking onto the connector.

2. Press other keys as well, like Ctrl and Caps Lock.

3. Is the other shift key working? If it is, it is most likely that the other one is faulty. If it's the case, you need to buy one from ebay.

Try to search on ebay and see if you can find just that single key, some sellers are selling just the key for a much cheaper price. If you can't find one that's selling single keys then am afraid you should buy yourself a keyboard replacement.

Hope this helps.,

@ key is not working when i press the shift key and @ its only giving me #2

Then your shift key may be faulty, try using the shift key on both sides of the keyboard to do this. If it still doesn't work then it means that your shift keys are fine its just the secondary functing of the "2" key that is faulty.

How to use Alt Car key?

I am guessing the Vaio you have is a Canadian model, which has alternate keyboard drivers for English and French. On these models, it seems the alt car key only works with the French keyboard (durr). To switch, press the LEFT control key and RIGHT shift key at the same time, then release. Now if you use the alt car key like the shift key, i.e. hold it down then press another key, you should be able to access the pink characters. To return to English keyboard, press left-ctrl and right-shift together again.

hth!

The right shift key does not work....it seems to be disabled

There isn't any way to disable a single key. The keyboard has a problem. You can pry the key off and test it by pressing down on the button under the key. If that does not work you will need to replace the keyboard.

Hello i was writing an email and held down the shift key for to long and an box came up with three options so i just pushed cancelled and now the keyboard is not working properly.capslock is back to front....

It seems your sticky keys got turned on somehow. Press shift key five times and it should turn off the sticky keys feature and fix your problem.

You might be wondering what is this feature all about, so here goes:

StickyKeys is an accessibility feature to aid users who have physical disabilities, but it is also used by others as a means to reduce RSI (or a syndrome called the Emacs Pinky). It essentially serializes keystrokes instead of pressing multiple keys at a time: StickyKeys allows the user to press a modifier key, such as Shift, Ctrl, Alt, or the Windows key, and have it remain active until another key is pressed.
