DVDs & CDs will not play

My new system is all set up, and the tuner works, but when a DVD is inserted, it says "read" on the tv screen for over a minute, then "stop." When "play" is pressed, "play" displays for a split second, then it immediately reverts to "stop." All my DVDs show a "1" in the globe. When a CD is inserted, nothing happens.

If you are playing STANDARD CD or regular DVD that you have purchase and you are having this problem, your dvd player is malfunction;however,if you are playing DVD burner disc or a different dvd region disc(we are region 1 in U.S.) that is no going to work.Same thing for your CD burner disc,it might not work.
If you are using a rental dvd disc, check and see if there is scratches? If so,try to get one without that many scratches!

My HP notebook does not play DVD's.

Does it play CDs perfectly fine ?
Did you check with other good (branded) DVDs ?
If possible, remove this dvd-drive, connect it with another laptop, and check.

If problem started after you installed anything, try undoing it through System Restore (All Programs - Accessories - System Restore).

Boot the computer in safe mode (tap F1 or F11, select Safe Mode), log in as Administrator.
Check if it reads DVDs here or not.
Create a new user account (Control Panel - User Accounts). Restart computer normally, and log in using this new account. Now check if DVDs work or not.

If still not working, backup your important data (write on blank CDs, or copy in USB pen drives), and then format the hard drive. (Restart the computer, and tap F10 to initiate recovery from hard drive partition.)

You may also use the Recovery Disk you got with this notebook. (Insert disk 1 in the drive, and restart the computer, and just follow the instructions).

If still no progress, chances are the DVD-drive lens has gone for a toss. Buy a new dvd-drive.

Hope this solution helps you.

Yes there is video format for our TV and dvd players. NTSC & PAL...

NTSC SYSTEM SELECTED IN TV & DVD PLAYER PLAY PERFECT NTSC CDS & DVDS, BUT IF PAL CD OR DVD IS INSERTED SUCH PROBLEM COMES.
EVEN IF, THE DVD PLAYER SETTING IS KEPT AS PAL, AND WE INSERTING THE CORRECT CD OR DVD AND ALSO IT SHOW BLACK & WHITE PICTURE, ETC.... so please check your video system in TV, DVD PLAYER and check the CD or DVD you are inserting is of same video format you have set in DVD player.

Plays cds but not dvds

If the lens is clean (clean with cotton swab and alcohol), then the optics are failing. DVDs require more power and accuracy to be read than CDs. The ability to read CDs but not DVDs is usually a good indication that the optics are starting to fail.

How to hook up a dvd recorder with HTS6500/37?

Suddenly had this problem. My Phillips is hooked up to TV and to Cable Box. When I inserted a DVD it would return a "no disc" but it would read and play CDs. After a call to Phillips...who said that they had no idea what was going on and I should take it in for service...it was 4 months out of warranty. Repair company said it was not worth the repair costs ($200) so I should try cleaning the lens with a lens cleaning disc. I bought a Maxell. It has a set of little brushes on the bottom of the disc. I inserted it and played track 2 for 20 seconds as instructed and voila! It began reading the DVDs again. I was only out the $10 for the disc cleaner. If you have this problem, try the disc cleaner first as it might be the fix.
