I have no problem logging onto the internet using my MR814 router, and I have no problem logging on from both my desktop and my laptop, both wirelessly. The problem comes about 15 - 30 minutes after I'm online. My internet connect will just drop. I have to unplug the router, plug it back in, and it will work for another 15 - 30 minutes. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I am connecting to Verizon DSL. When I had internet access through the cable company, I was told by their tech support that their system changes the IP address every 15 - 30 minutes and apparently my router would not renew the IP address. Is there a way to make it do this, or is that not the problem at all? Thank you!
A wireless router if set at enable DHCP will always asign an IP address to each pc, and keep it, it will not alter until the next time your connected, and even if the first pc that you connected with, first next time, it will get the same ip address allocation. The solution may be that your router is set to disconnect from the internet after a period of innactivity. Go into router settings and look for something similair to (Idle connection-Never).

The setting is correct, so see if there is a firmware update for the router, or get your ISP to do a line check.
I had a similair problem for at least 2 weeks only to find the problem was at the exchange. and not at my end.
Next time it drops connection go into your routers settings and see if it loses the dns addresses of yor broadband provider.

Restoring factory defaults on a device will erase any customizations you have made. You will lose any configurations saved to the device!
From the center screen, select your encryption type from under the Security Options heading.
If the wireless network passphrase is visible, review it and use it to log devices onto your network.
If it is not visible, you can change your wireless passphrase; however, changing the passphrase will cause you to lose your wireless connection. Connect your computer to the router with an Ethernet cable before entering a new passphrase into the text box and clicking Apply.
hope this helps
Log in to your NETGEAR router by browsing to http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com. Enter the username (admin)and password by default the password is 1234 unless it has already been changed
from the left-hand navigation menu of the router manager, select wireles set up>wireless settings
from the center screen, select your encrytion type from under the Security Options heading
if the wireless network passphrase is visible, review it and use it to log on devices onto your network.
If it is not visible you can change your wireless passphrase but changing your passphrase will cause you to lose your wireless connection
Connect your computer to the router using an Ethernet Cable before entering a new passphrase into the text box and clicking apply.
If you cannot log into your router:Unfortunately, there is no way to recover a lost or forgotten password from a router or access point; you will need to reset the device to factory defaults. However, once the device is reset to factory defaults, you can use the default username ("admin") and password (either "password" or "1234" depending on your router) to reconfigure your router settings.

Mine is set to Idle connection = 0. And I lose connection when I am active. I'll be in the middle of whatever and I'm just disconnected. Is that setting what you are telling me to do? And if that is the problem, would it disconnect even when I am active?
