I have not used ours for a long time. when I hooked it up all it does is flash. If I took it in to Best Buy, could they retrieve the dats?

Same problem (computer does not recognize drive) with my Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 80 GB. Worked perfectly in the past -but now, nothing.

this is brand new, and was used as backup to last year's 1tb WD MyBookwhen I needed drivesavers to retrieve my data. Different problem with this one. Lighton drive just flashes but will not come to fully lit/on.

I have the same problem. I have a fairly new MyBook home edition. I read something on another forum but I cannot confirm its accuracy. It said that the circuit board is fried/damaged and the device is not getting enough power to make the device function (aside from the quick flashing lights).

I have an HD160 and the light does not stop flashing. A first time it started with the problem it sort of fixed on its own, however I can not get it to work. I checked the power supply circuit and voltages are working fine. Anybody knows how to reset it?

This may sound silly, but sometimes if you put the drive in the freezer overnight it will work long enough for you to retrieve your data.Make sure you are ready to copy the data to another as it will likely fail again once it warms up.

Western Digital MYBOOK 500GB external harddrive won't come on. When it plugs in, the blue light comes on for about a second. Computer does not recognize drive.

It is "dead". If it is still under warranty (check 'www.wdc.com' for details), then Western Digital will replace it. If not, check their web-site, for their "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., since you bought one W.D. disk-drive, you can get a discount on buying another W.D. disk-drive, if you order online from W.D.'s web-site.

Western Digital External Hard Drive Won't Boot Up

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.

The green light on my WD 500GB external hard drive started flashing and since then my computer has not recognized it. How do I fix this?

It is possible that the connection between the two drives is interrupted. If you really go the safest way, turn off your pc and disconnect your external drive. Reboot your pc and see if you when reconnecting your drive Windows finds it.
