Yes it is possible. The hard drive is a 2.5 hard disk as the ones used in laptops.
Here a free service manual with disassembling instructions. The replacement must be done by an experienced repairer, as there is risk to damage the camcorder.

This can be due to failure of the loading motor mechanism . Since you are hearing the clicking sound , it is possible that the motor is working to the command from the processor but there is failure in the mechanical drive., This can be due to pulley slipping , gear failure or belt failure.
Unless the camera is opened to remove the covers and get access to the mechanism , the exact fault cannot be confirmed.

My camera's backlight went dark. Occasionally it would work if I pressed just the right way, but it was basically toast.

It's not impossible to replace, but it's definitely not for the faint of heart. Some offer a replacement service with it. I'm doing mine myself. Results to follow, maybe, if I remember to post following the repair.
