According to the manual I am able to use the zoom function automatically with the D70s, but I can not figure out how to get it to work. It says without the small M above where it says ZOOM, the zoom head position will be automatically adjusted. If a small M appears, press the buttons which look like trees several times until this disappears. I have tried this and nothing happens!
Can anyone help me to understand how I can get my flash to zoom automatically?
Thank you.

It should. Nikon lenses are both backwards and forward compatible. Depending if you have an older or newer lens than camera, some of the automatic functions may not work or may not be available. Worst case, you will be able to use your lens in the manual mode.
You can zoom in to a map or satellite image by pressing 3 on the numberpad (Figure 9), or zoom out by pressing 1 (Figure 10). Multiple presses will zoom you closer in or further out, respectively.
Above is how to Zoom In & Out, below is your user and troubleshooting manual for your convenience. Anything else to do with the Zoom function is inside.

Travelling-ZoomTM function : Always be in the frame with this unique feature which tracks your face and even enlarges the field of view if there is more than one person in the frame. All completely automatic, just look at the web cam!
The above tells me that you can have automatic or manual 3x digital zoom. Go to the manual mode for the digital zoom and problem might be solved.
Possibly a intermittent connection in the control buttons or the ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector from the controls to the main PCB. Take it in for servicing, they will do a trial by substitution (swap out control) and lubricate the connector. There isn't really anything you can do to fix with this sort of problem.
The camera is unable to focus properly in low light at long focal lengths. You might have to throw some light on the subject with a flashlight until the camera locks in the focus or resort to focussing manually.
2) I do not understand your assertion that it automatically zoomed in. Zooming is a manual function. The automatic functions of your lens pertain only to focusing on of the subject so that your picture is sharp and ensuring that the correct amount of light is admitted so that you have a correct exposure.
3) Are you sure you were turning the zoom ring and not the f-stop ring? The zoom ring is labeled 200 on one end of the scale and 55 on the other. It is also the widest ring on the lens barrel. When you rotate it, the physical length of the lens will lengthen as you rotate it clockwise (viewed from behind the camera) and shorten as you rotate it counter-clockwise.
4) For reference, at 200mm the angle of view on your lens should be 10 degrees and at 55mm about 40 degrees.
You can also get a 1.4 or 2x teleconverter to further increase the power of a telephoto lens. However, the cameras are unable to auto-focus when the minimum f-stop exceeds f/8, which can happen when you use one (or both) of the teleconverters on these longer lenses, so you have to manually focus the lens.
You can also get telephoto lenses from other manufacturers such as Tamron and Sigma that are built to work with Canon cameras. However, the Canon lenses are generally regarded as the best quality.
According to manual you should use the navigational d-pad left and right arrows. If it does not zoom in it is probably because resolution is at the maximum allowed and you cannot zoom in any further.
