When I try to run the unit without case it appears the scanning assembly will make a valid pass (rear-to-front) only if previously moved back manually (it's driven by a single motor via a worm screw). So it's either the motor is not engaging in reverse when it should or the circuitry misdetects the assembly's position thinking it's in the rear when in fact it's not.

Delete the software. restart computer Come off line. Disable the anti virus software and fire wall. Now reinstall the software. Check out that is runs before reinstating A/V and firewall.
SOURCE: negatives scan as negatives and not as pictures with the plustek 7300
In the Twain driver for your intellscan, there should be a selection for the type of scan. It should be set to "black & White Negative" or "Color Negative". The program you use to edit the scanned file should be able to change it to a positive if the scanned result is still negative. Programs such as Photoshop, Paint shop Pro etc can use Twain to have the scanner scan directly into them. There the phot (negative) can be edited and saved.

It is quite possible that there is another piece of software that is clashing with your Plustek OpticFilm scanner. It is hard to tell which software is having a clash. If you remove that software from your system you will obtain the desired results.
I suspect the SP3 of Windows XP may be responsible for this because Microsoft has indicated that Windows XP SP3 is not for everyone. If you install Windows XP SP2 uninstalling XP SP3 your problem can definitely be rectified.
Good Luck!
