The screen isn't actually black when the player isn't turned on, more of a dark grey color. I say this because it's actually possible for the player to turn the screen darker when it's turned on ... the lettering on iPod menus is darker than the background color.
I would recommend that you try to reset the player, but given that it sounds like it's one of those Chinese clones of an iPod, and not an iPod itself, I don't know how you'd reset it. Most MP3 players can be reset by sliding and holding the power switch into the "on" position for some number of seconds (try 20), then releasing it.
well it sounds like your system may need to be reset, is it new or have you had it for a while? i would start by going to the website and see if there are any forums or directions you can look at to fix it.. if it's new, i would definitely contact that manufacturer or go to their site for some support, maybe even online.. i hope this helps..d
