I have resently purchased this unit from a previous owner and would like to know how do I go about clearing up his/her user information.
I live in another state and when I do a search or anything it will pull up information from Texas and California where the previous owner must have lived.
Basically how do I reset/clean out this unit so I can basically use it as if I just freshly bought it out the store and took it home.
Please help and thank you :).

Re: Resetting User Preferences on GPS
When your 700 initially boots up to the user menu, press the zoom out key "-" and the repeat button (on top of the unit). This will bring you to another menu. Scroll down until you see reset user data or something along those lines. There's one that resets the "gps user data" and then there's the other one that you want to use. After you select reset user data, your unit will clear out all memory (from users preferences anyway) and will automatically shutdown. Fire it up after this happens and this should fixya.

To hard reset the unit turn the unit off, hold down the mode button and turn the unit on. When the unit asks if you want to erase all user data, select yes. After resetting the unit, leave it with a clear view of the sky for about 30 minutes to acquire the satellite almanac
If you need to update your maps, check this site for downloading instructions and downloadable ISO files for installing the more current maps. They may or may not be free, depending on your previous map purchases. They also sell the upgrade software, but its a little pricey. They are located in Australia.

You have Garmin Lock activated on your nuvi: there are only two ways you can unlock it.
1. Enter the PIN code (but you clearly don't have it or you wouldn't be reading this).
Take the unit to the Security Location you chose when activating Garmin
Lock: it will then unlock without the PIN code and you can then either
reset the PIN or disable Garmin Lock. The Security Location should not
be the owner's home address, but many owners ignore this recommendation.
Many owners choose their workplace or a close friend or relatives
address for this purpose. Clearly this option is not available to you in this instance unless you know the person you purchased it from.
If neither option works then your unit
is useless unless you send it to Garmin with proof of purchase. Garmin
charge for the service and if your maps are not up to date then it's
really a waste of money as the investment would be better spent on a new
unit with current mapping.
I hope that you manage to either fix
your problem using my advice or at least can decide whether to abandon
the unit and buy another.
Since you bought the device used, it's likely the previous owner did not clear the passwords and data. Short of tracking down the previous owner, there is no way to unlock the unit without doing a factory reset. Here's a guide to reset the Garmin GPS units to their original factory settings. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/09/how-to-reset-garmin-nuvi-gps-device-access-maintenance-mode/

Have you tried clearing the user settings which is slightly different to resetting the unit?
I'm assuming that because you havnt got past the password screen yet you dont have any of your own settings on there yet?
Hold your finger on the lower-right of the Nuvi screen while you turn the unit on.
Keep your finger pressed until the pop-up screen appears.
Touch YES to clear all user data.
** All original settings will be restored **
*** Any user items that you have saved will be erased ***
I hope that helps..
It fixed my garmin Nuvi 660:

Have you tried resetting unit to the factory default? To get to this, press the snake button, then settings, then user settings. On the last page you will see reset to factory defaults. This will erase all info on the device as if it were new.
